In a year which saw a worrying trend of movies not getting a theatrical release due to the global pandemic that hit the world in 2020 its unsure if the industry will recover as studios see big returns for movies on streaming services rather than box office returns.

The biggest grossing movie in the UK for the year is 1917 from director Sam Mandes which was released in January and has not been challenged all year as movies after March had no chance of making a substantial box office return.

The two movies which tried the most were Tenet released in August and did manage to become the 5th top movie of the year and Wonder Woman 1984 which although released in December, after many release changes, was hit by another UK lockdown which has massively impacted its box office potential.

Of the top 5 movies in the UK 2 of them were released in 2019 and 2 of them released in early 2020 with Tenet being the other.

Worth of a mention is that apart from Tenet which is the top movie in the pandemic era sleeper hit After We Collided which was released in early September is the 20th top movie of the year with a total gross of £4 Million, a great achievement in the current market.

Also worthy of a mention is the success the Disney/Pixar movie Onward had at the box office, it was the top movie of the week in March when cinemas closed, then the movie continued to top the box office when cinemas re-opened in July despite already being available on Disney+, the movie is the 12 top movie of 2020 with £7.5 Million.

With a vaccine not hitting the UK in late 2020 the first part of 2021 might be slow for cinemas as well, but providing they can survive once we hit spring it is hopeful doors will start to open again and capacity can return to normal and the box office can start properly once more.

Here is a break down of the top 5 movies in the UK for 2020.

1917

Released in January of 2020 the single shot Oscar nominated movie took £43.7 Million by mid March when cinemas shut down.

The film took a total gross of £43.9 Million by the end of 2020 and is the top movie of the year.

Sonic the Hedgehog

After a troubled first showing of Sonic when the lead character was redesign at the request of the fans, the movie was delayed to mid February 2020 where it took just nuder five million pound on its opening weekend.

After a five week run the Jim Carey starring movie had taken £19 Million and then after cinemas re-opened it's total UK gross rose to £19.2 Million.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Released at the very end of 2019 the JJ Abrams directed, last of the Skywalker sega, took £29.4 Million during its release year.

The movie continued to pull in audiences on 2020 and took another £18.8 Million until the end of January.

Little Women

Released on the last weekend of 2019 where is took £3.5 Million the movie continued to do well into 2020 where it took an extra £17.5 Million until mid February.

Tenet

After getting its original release date moved to 28th August the movie was to be the saviour of cinema after 4 month of closures to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

Despite much criticism for Warner Bros. releasing the movie when not all cinemas had reopened and capacity was limited the movie spend 13 weeks on the chart taking £17.5 Million and scraped its way into the top 5 movies of 2020.

It's Friday 13th November 2020 and there are a couple of new film released in the UK and where available looking to hit the box office.

After last weekends top movie, The Three Kings got to number 1 in an odd roundabout sort of way can it be replaced this weekend?

The Last Shift

  • The movie is directed by Andrew Cohn
  • Andrew Cohn also directed Danny Brown Live At The Majestic in 2018.
  • It stars Richard Jenkins who last starred in Kajillionaire (2020).
  • The film also stars Shane Paul McGhie who last appeared in After We Collided (2020).

Hillbilly Elegy

  • This new release stars Amy Adams who's last film was The Woman In The Window (2020)
  • It also stars Glenn Close who appeared in The Wife (2018).
  • The film is brought to us by veteran director Ron Howard.

Love Spreads

  • The movie is directed by Jamie Adams who directed A Wonderful Christmas Time in 2014.
  • It stars Alia Shawkat and Eiza González.

Billie

  • Also this week there is Billie from director James Erskine who also directed Pantani The Accidental Death Of A Cyclist in 2014.
  • The film features Billie Holiday in starring roles.

A Place Among the Dead

  • The long list of new releases continues with A Place Among The Dead which is directed by Juliet Landau which is a directorial debut.
  • It stars Juliet Landau and Gary Oldman.

Check back on Monday to see what new movies made it onto the Weekend Box Office Chart.

Next weeks there are 3 new movies

  • Ashens And The Polybius Heist, Thursday, 19th November
  • The Kid Detective, Friday, 20th November
  • Another Round, Friday, 20th November

Liam Neeson remains at the top of the US box office this weekend with the revenge thriller Honest Thief, in fact the top 3 movies remain the same as last week!

The highest new movie of the weekend is horror movie The Empty Man which makes its debut at number 4, also making a debut this week is Monsters Inc. re-release which enters at 7 and After We Collided which makes its debut at 8.

Here is the US box office Quickview.

  • Number 1 - Honest Thief (2nd week)
  • Highest debut - The Empty Man (@4)
  • Longest run - Unhinged (11 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Tenet ($52,500,000) (not including re-releases)

US top 5 box office breakdown 23rd - 25th October 2020.

Honest Thief

Liam Neeson stars in the revenge thriller which remains at the top of the US box office for a second weekend, the week taking $2.3 Million which is only a 36% drop from last weekend.

This pushes the total gross in the US to $7.4 Million on its second weekend, and with more and more cinemas starting to open it could be one of the bigger film to open during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The War With Grandpa

The Tim Hill directed comedy starring Robert De Niro remains at number 2 this week with $1.8 Million, only 25% down from last weekend.

The film has been out for 3 weeks now and has taken $9.7 Million since release.

The Empty Man

**UPDATE** With the release of the final weekend figures The Empty Man has taken just a little more than Tenet and so ended in third place rather than fourth.

Highest new movie of the week is the David Prior directed horror movie which lands at number 3 this weekend with $1.26 Million.

with Halloween next weekend the movie should have a strong second weekend but then the potential to drop off the chart is strong, although horror movies did shine during the pandemic cinema shutdown when only drive-in theatres were open.

Tenet

Warner Bros. have admitted that their 'savour of cinema' movie was actually a failure and just maybe they opened the movie too soon, regardless of that the movie takes $1.3 Million this weekend, a drop of only 19%.

The movie has been on the box office for 8 weeks now and is by far the highest grossing movie since cinemas closed in March with $52.5 Million, as a side note Warner Bros. have been cagy about the movies box office figures.

The Nightmare Before Christmas

Disney's re-release of their Henry Selick directed classic falls to number 5 this weekend with $577,000, a 57% drop, giving the movie a total gross of $76.9 Million since its 1994 release.

This weekend looked like it would be the week that Tenet was removed from the top of the UK box offie but despite the many new releases it hung on for an 8th weekend.

The event movie concert feature Micheal Ball & Alfie Boe: Back Together is the top new movie of the week coming in impressively at number 2 while further down the box office the only other new movie is the documentary feature I Am Greta at number 8.

Worthy of mention this weekend is Hocus Pocus which was re-released last weekend and hit number 14 and this week increases by 51% and bounces to number 7.

Its also worthy of a mention that for the first time since 21st August 2020 the top 15 movies in the UK did not gross over a million combined, the total is £986K, and thats with a lot of new films hitting the market.

Here is the UK box office Quickview.

  • Number 1 - Tenet (8 weeks)
  • Highest debut - Michael Ball & Alfie Boe: Back Together (@2)
  • Longest run - Onward (19 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Tenet (£16,877,908)

Here is this weeks UK top 5 breakdown weekend 16th - 18th October 2020.

Tenet

Eight weeks on and the Christopher Nolan directed movie is still in the number 1 position, this week with its lowest weekend gross to date at £187.2K, a 37% drop from last weekend.

The movie has now taken £16.8 Million at the UK box office which is the directors 6th highest grossing movie, and its more that 20005's Batman Begins (not adjusted for inflation).

Michael Ball & Alfie Boe: Back Together

Event cinema has been a part of the box office for years now and in the current climate with the box office suffering due to a lack of big blockbuster movies we get a Micheal Ball and Alfie Boe concert as the top new movie of the weekend.

Entering at number 2 the event took £175K on its 2 days of release, Saturday and Sunday.

Saint Maud

Last weeks top new movie falls to number 3 this weekend with £132.2K which boosts the movies total gross to £520.3K after 10 days of release which is 45% down from its debut gross.

After We Collided

The surprise hit of late summer remains at number 4 this week with £107.4K over the weekend, 45% down from last weekend.

This gives the movie a total gross in the UK of £3.7 Million after 7 weeks of release.

Cats & Dogs: Paws Unite!

Staying at number 5 is the Cats & Dogs sequel which takes &45.4K on its 3rd weekend of release, 40% down, giving it a £326K total.
