UK box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Top Gun Maverick (1st weekend)
  • Highest debut - Top Gun Maverick (@1)
  • Longest run - The Phantom of the Open (10 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness (£37.7 Million)
Following in the footsteps of movies like Blade Runner which had a sequel decades after the original Top Gun Maverick makes its debut at the top of the UK box office 36 years after the original Top Gun.

Also following the in the footsteps, this time of animated TV series The Simpsons, Bob's Burgers makes its way from TV show to movie as The Bobs Burgers Movie makes its debut at number 5 this weekend.

UK weekend box office top 5 breakdown 27th - 29th May 2022

Top Gun Maverick

Top Gun released in 1986 was the breakout movie for Tom Cruise and catapulted the young actor into mega stardom, there have been many attempts to bring a sequel to the big screen and 36 years later we finally get the movie.

After amazing reviews the movie flies into the box office at number 1 on its debut weekend with a gross of £15 Million making it the highest grossing debut for the actor, and the 27th highest debut of all time.

Its unfair to compare the gross of the sequel with the original but Top Gun opened to around £4.2 Million in 1986 which adjusted for inflation is about £16 Million, it went on to gross around £8.5 Million in the UK which adjusted for inflation is about £31 Million.

The movie is already the 8th top film in 2022, it should end up in the top 5 if not the top 3 by year end.

Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness

After spending 3 weeks at the top the sequel movie to Doctor Strange falls to number 2 this weekend with a gross os £1.3 Million, a fairly big 54% drop over last weekend.

This gives the film a total UK gross of £37.7 Million after 4 weeks of release, it is currently the top grossing movie on the top 15.

For 2022 it is currently the second top grossing movie but it should take The Batman by next weekend to become the top movie of the year so far, unless Top Gun Maverick spoils the party, and with a very long holiday weekend coming who can tell!

Everything Everywhere All At Once

The independent movie about the multiverse has done amazingly well considering it went up against Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness but the movie peaked at number 2 last weekend and drops to number 3 this week with £486,829, a 42% drop.

After 3 weeks on the box office the movie has taken £3 Million in the UK.

Downton Abbey: A New Era

Dropping to number 4 this weekend is the British aristocracy movie which takes £350,593, a 54% drop, over its 5th weekend giving the movie a total UK gross of £13 Million.

The sequel has not done as well as its predecessor as that movie had taken £25 Million at this point in its run having spent 3 weeks at the top.

The movie is the 10th top movie of 2022.

The Bobs Burgers Movie

The Belcher family make their big screen debut as they transfer to the big screen which takes £346,591 on its debut.

The TV series Bob's Burgers is not as big in the UK as it is in America where the movie made its debut at number 3, and compared to The Simpsons Movie which made its debut on 2007, that movie took an amazing £13.6 Million and debuted at the top, The Simpsons are an institution thought!

Marvel's Eternals spends a second weekend on top of the UK box office in a week where there are no new releases making an impact on the box office with the biggest mover being the Princess Diana film Spencer which jumps up to the top 5 on its second week.

Top new movie of the weekend is Mothering Sunday directed by Eva Husson and featuring Olivia Coleman and Colin Firth among its cast, it enters at number 1 with £156,940 while the Clint Eastwood western Cry Macho makes its UK debut at 15 with £72,130.

UK box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Eternals (2nd Weekend)
  • Highest debut - Mothering Sunday (@11)
  • Longest run - No Time To Die (7 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - No Time To Die (£92.7 Million)

UK box office top 5 breakdown weekend 12th - 14th November 2021

Eternals

Staying at the top of the UK box office for a second weekend the Marvel Studios movie takes £2.9 Million, a reasonable 47% drop over last weekend.

This drop is better than Marvels other 2021 movie Black Widow which dropped a massive 74% on its second weekend, but it was on Disney+ as well, but worse than Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings which only dropped 38%, but there was pent up cinema demand at the time.

The movie has taken £10.5 Million over its 2 weeks of release which is actually comparable to the other 2021 Marvel movies, but with the hype for Spider-Man: No Way Home going beyond fever pitch that movies mid December release could effect the final few weeks box office for this Chloe Zhao directed movie.

Still for a movie which has fairly unfavourable review it will end up with a £20 Million+ total UK gross which is not bad for a new IP.

No Time To Die

Daniel Craigs final Bond outing stays put at number 2 this weekend with a gross of £1.5 Million, a very slim 21% on its 7th weekend of release, which could be down to people finally deciding its safe to go back to cinemas and not wanting to miss the big screen experience.

The movie has taken a massive £92.7 Million in the UK and it will end up as the top movie of 2021, I don't think even Spider-Man: No Way Home can beat this, and with the movie coming out so late in the year much of its take will be in 2022.

The movie is still the 5th top movie of all time in the UK, but it should be able to take Avatar by next weekend and settle under Spectre and Skyfall on the top 5 UK movies of all time, it will most likely struggle to get over £100 Million in the UK though.

Dune

Remaining at number 3 this weekend is director Denis Villeneuve take on the classic schi-fi noval which takes £1.7 Million over the weekend, again a very slim drop of only 24%.

This gives the movie a total UK gross of £18.9 Million and the 4th top movie of 2021 as it prepares to overtake Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway at number 3.

The movie is now the top grossing movie in the UK for the celebrated director having just overtaken the UK gross of 2017's Blade Runner 2049.

Spencer

The bio-pic of Princess Diana goes on wider release and climbs to number 4 on the box office with £698,065, a 29% increase over last weekend where it debuted at number 6.

The movie starring Kristen Stewart as the late Princess has taken £1.5 Million in the UK after 2 weeks.

The Boss Baby 2: Family Business

Staying put at number 5 this weekend is the animated sequel which takes £574,218 on its 4th weekend, a very small 5% drop, giving the movie a total in the UK of £6.4 Million.
