Disney and Marvel release the first movie from the MCU Phase 4 this weekend and despite its many delays hits the top of the global box office.

Coming in second is the Chinese movie Chinese Doctors which is also the top movie is its native terretory.

Other new movies on this weeks global box office are Realm of Terracotta at 6 with $8.17 Million and Tokyo Revengers at number 9 with $6.05 Million.

Global box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Black Widow (1st Weekend)
  • Highest debut - Black Widow (@1)
  • Longest run - The Croods: A New Age (29 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Fast & Furious 9 (541.8 Million)

Global box office top 5 breakdown 9th - 11th July 2021

Black Widow

One of the major blockbusters to get moved around during the pandemic the start of the MCU phase 4 gets its cinematic run going with an expected number 1 debut with $158.8 Million from a massive 47 territories.

As the movie is also available on the Disney+ platform with an additional fee, which brought in nearly $100 Million more for the movie, it could be a tough box office ahead as many will choose to wait until its available without the additional fee in the coming months.

Chinese Doctors

Released in China only this dramatic tale takes the runner up spot from its single country to a fantastic $53.2 Million on its debut.

Fast & Furious 9

Falling from the number 1 position to number 3 this week is the ninth movie if The Fast Saga which takes $24.4 Million from a very wide 52 countries, its a drop of 49% over last weekend.

The movie has been on release now for 8 weeks and has taken a total of $541.8 Million, crossing the half billion mark.

The Boss Baby 2

Falling to number 4 this weekend is the animated sequel which takes $9.2 Million from 9 countries, a large 51% drop, for a $37.2 Million total after 2 weeks.

The Forever Purge

Falling to number 5 this week the 5 movie in The Purge series takes $8.4 Million from 29 countries, a 48% drop, giving the movie a $34.8 Million gross after 2 weeks of release.

During the Disney earnings call on August 4th it was announced that the live action version of Mulan, which has had many theatrical delays, will be released on the monthly subscription Disney+ for $29.99.

That is in America at least where the COVID-19 pandemic is still keeping cinemas from opening.

Disney also announced that other countries where Disney+ was available would get the movie, but some countries that don't will get a theatrical release.

The UK has Disney+ and movie theatres are starting to open, and by September 4th, the announced release date, even more will be open.

The movie is most likely to get a duel release in the UK, and other countries in Europe as well as Australia and New Zealand so people can choose how to watch it, a worrying move for the cinema industry.

Other films that have been delayed are The New Mutants and Black Widow which are still set to have theatrical released but could also get Disney+ 'rental' releases as well as hit cinemas.

Lets hope (for many reasons) things get back to normal soon, then we can start enjoying more movies as they should be seen, in a movie theatre!
