Top of the new releases was Sing 2 which came in at 2, followed by The Matrix Resurrections which was new at 3.

British movie The King's Man was new at number 4 and then finally in the top 5 American Underdog came in just below.

Also new this week is A Journal For Jordan which came in at 8 with $2.2 Million and '83 from director Kabir Khan came in at 10 with $1.76 Million.

US box office weekend top 5 breakdown 24th - 26th December 2021

Spider Man: No Way Home

The smash hit Marvel/Sony movie spends a second weekend at the top of the US box office with a weekend gross of $81.5 Million, a 69% drop over last weekend which isn't too bad considering the giant debut gross the movie had.

The movie has now taken a total gross in the US of $467.3 Million making it now by far the top grossing movie of 2021 having grossed twice as much as the movie at number 2 for the year, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

The movie also this weekend enters the top 20 US movies of all time at number 19.

Sing 2

Highest new entry of the weekend is the animated sequel movie which takes $23.7 Million on its debut.

The film is a sequel to the 2017 movie Sing which took $35.2 Million in North America on its debut on its way to $634.2 Million over 9 weeks.

The Matrix Resurrections

The long awaited follow up to the highly successful Matrix series of movies makes its debut this weekend at number 3 with $12 Million.

The pre hype for the movie was sky high, but an luke warm response on its release, and a simultaneous HBO Max release has by the looks of it damaged its box office potentital.

The King's Man

A prequel to the Kingsmen movies lands at number 4 this weekend with a gross of $6.3 Million.

Matthew Vaughn directs once again, but Ralph Fiennes takes over in the lead role this time, but diminishing returns seems to have set in for this series.

American Underdog

Making its debut at number 5 this weekend is this inspirational movie starring Zachary Levi about a down on his luck potential NFL great, the movie takes $6.2 Million on its debut.

This weekend the US box office showed the first definite signs of recovery as the sequel movie A Quiet Place Part II opens to the biggest weekend of the pandemic.

Also opening big this weekend is Cruella which makes its debut in the runner up spot and worth of a mention is Raya and the Last Dragon which despite being 14 weeks old increases its weekend gross and goes over the $50 Million mark.

  • Number 1 - A Quiet Place Part II (1st Weekend)
  • Highest debut - A Quiet Place Part II (@1)
  • Longest run - Raya and the Last Dragon (14 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Godzilla Vs. Kong ($97.7 Million)

US box office top 5 breakdown 28th - 30th May 2021

A Quiet Place Part II

Sequel to the 2018 movie A Quiet Place director John Krasinski takes us on another journey in the post apoplectic where a slightest sound can cost you your life.

The movie takes an amazing $48.3 Million on its debut weekend which is only 5% lower that the fist movie, and as cinemas are still not 100% open across the country you can see why the studio wanted to delay the movie.

Excellent word of mouth will take this movie through the summer and it has already become not only the summer blockbuster to see this year but a horror classic.

Cruella

Disney release the Cruella De'vil origin movie on Disney+ premium as well as at theatres wich may have damaged its box office potential slightly.

Still the Emma Stone starring movie wakes a excellent $21.3 Million on its debut and enters the box office at number 2.

Spiral: From the Book of Saw

Spending 2 weeks at the top of the US box office the Saw sequel movie falls to number 3 this weekend.

A $2.2 Million gross is a 50% drop from last weekend and puts the movies total gross at $19.7 Million after 3 weeks of release.

Wrath of Man

The Jason Statham starring action movie falls to number 4 this weekend with $2.1 Million, a 28% drop, for a total gross of $22.1 Million after 4 weeks of release.

Raya and the Last Dragon

Spending yet another weekend in the top 5 the Disney animated tale is still taking nearly $2 Million a week at the box office, this is a 17% increase from last weekend.

The movie has now passed the $50 Million mark with a total gross of $50.8 Million after 14 weeks of release.

The follow up to 2014's hit film The Lego Movie makes its debut on the UK box offie this weekend although the 5 year gap has not been kind to the little brick movie.

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Movie

Opening to a £4 million debut weekend the second lego movie has taken half that of the opening weekend of the first movie in the series.

It been 5 years since that movie caused a storm and despite the humour being very similar and the film generally getting good reviews The Batman Lego Movie and The Lego Ninjago Movie were not well received and may have damaged the brands reputation.

Alita: Battle Angel

Heavily hyped as 'from producer James Cameron' and 'directed by Robert Rodriguez' this live action Japanese cyberpunk manga hits the UK box office at number 2.

Taking £3.1 million on its debut its in the same ball park but a little below Ghost In The Shell from 2017 which had bigger star appeal but reviews weren't as good.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

A single week at the top for the threequel dragon movie as it falls to number 3 this week with £2.7 million and a £9 million total after 10 days of release.

Green Book

Falling to number 4 on its second week of release the drama starring Viggo Mortensen takes just over a million to boost its 10 day total to £3.6 million.

Glass

Loosing steam fast now is the James McAvoy starring film which falls to 5 this week with £560,579 push its total just £9.6 million, it will go over the £10 million mark by next weekend.

Mary Poppins Returns

The disney film continues to be the top film so far of 2019 with a gross of £20 million although its total gross is £43 million.
