This weekend with the release of the highly anticipated Ridley Scott film Alien: Covenant we were always going to see a new film at the top, and Guardians gets push off by the Alien movie.

Despite the mediocre reviews the films launch has it enter the top with a weekend gross of &5.1 million, compared to its predecessor Prometheus this is a million lower.

Falling from the top is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 after a couple of weeks at the top, a £3,2 million weekend brings the films total to £33 million after 3 weeks of play.

Studios were a bit nervous to release new films against the Alien movie but Miss Sloan starring hot property Jessica Chastain entered the chart at 8 with just over £190,000.

Also new was the Cinema event feature Der Rosenkavalier: Met Opera 2017 which took a little over £313,000 and is at 6.

Beaty and The Beast is the longest running film on the box office with 9 weeks of release and has taken an amazing £71 million, its the 8th top grossing film ever in the UK.

Historical Charts

Ten years ago - Spider-Man 3 stayed at the top for a second weekend while 28 Weeks Later entered highest at number 2.

Fifteen years ago - About a Boy was the top film of the week for a third time while Dog Soldiers was the top new film at 3.

Twenty years ago - Staying at the top was Liar Liar while the top new film was at number 4 int the shape of Anaconda.

More fun facts for you as the year draws to a close, this time the most tweeted about films of 2012, and the winner is the Tim Story directed Think Like a Man.

The film didn't exactly set the box office alight although it did hit the top spot in America. Following on from that is the most Googled film of the year, The Hunger Games.

The full top ten most Tweeted films of 2012 is as follows -

  • Think Like a Man
  • The Hunger Games
  • The Avengers (Avengers Assemble in the UK)
  • Red Tails
  • 21 Jump Street
  • Dark Knight Rises
  • Dark Shadows
  • The Devil Inside
  • Safe House
  • The Vow
And out of interest the most Tweeted film show was Family Guy, and most Tweeted about celebrity was Justin Bieber.

It was a sizable hit back in March of this year and people took to Google to find out more as The Hunger Games is the most searched for film if 2012.

Maybe it's because it was a little unkown when the film came out, who knows but the film beat Skyfall which is second and Prometeus which is thurd.

The full list 10 ten most searched films on google is - 1. The Hunger Games - 2. Skyfall - 3. Prometheus - 4. The Avengers - 5. Magic Mike - 6. John Carter - 7. Ek Tha Tiger - 8. Paranormal Activity 4 - 9. Taken 2 - 10. Dark Shadows

An interesting array of films with no mention of Breaking Dawn, The Dark Knight Rises, The Hobbit or Spider-Man!

Interestingly the 2 actors which got the most search queries this year were Whitney Houston and Michael Clarke Duncan who both sadly passed away this year.

What can we learn from this? Probably not a lot but it's interesting to see, what do you think? To see more go to Google's Zeitgeist site.
