Black Widow and Space Jam 2 fought it out for the top spot this weekend with the Marvel MCU movie coming out on top and remaining at number 1 for a second weekend.

Space Jam: A New legacy made its debut at number 2 while The Forever Purge and The Croods: A New Age also made new entries inside the top 5.

Continuing the new releases Escape Room: Tournament of Champions just missed a place on the top 5 making its debut at 6 with £278,097 and documentary feature Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) was new at 10 with £62 Thousand.

UK box office top 5 breakdown 16th - 18th July 2021

Black Widow

The Scarlett Johansson starring movie remains at the top of the UK box office for a second weekend with £1.8 Million, a quite large 74% drop from last weekend.

This gives the movie a total UK gross of £11.2 Million after 2 weeks of release and its the fourth top grossing movie of 2021 so far.

Space Jam: A New Legacy

Making its debut at number 2 this weekend is the sequel movie to 1996's Space Jam which took £1.3 Million over the weekend.

Compared to the original its far lower as the 1996 original took £4.6 Million on it's debut weekend, its a little unfair considering the global pandemic, but I would have thought this movie would have taken less regardless.

The Forever Purge

The fifth movie in the long running series makes its debut at number 3 with £720,032.

The highest grossing movie in the series is 2018's The First Purge which took £1.7 Million on its debut.

The Croods: A New Age

Another sequel hitting the box office this weekend is the animated sequel starring Nicolas Cage which makes its debut at number 4 with £696,563.

The original movie, The Croods was released in 2013 and took £5.3 Million on its debut, even considering the pandemic this is a disappointing debut for the sequel.

Fast & Furious 9

The ninth Fast movie falls to number 5, from 2, on its 4th weekend of release with a gross of £446,126, a large 59% drop.

This movie seems to be sinking faster than expected and after 4 weeks has taken £14.14 Million, although it is currently the second top grossing movie of 2021.

One again there was little in the way of new release which means the top 5 movies more or less stayed the same as the previous week.

The Liam Neeson starring The Marksman remained at the top and and The Croods: A New Age and <>Wonder Woman 1984 swapped places, and thats it really!

There was one new entry one he chart, Our Friend starring Dakota Johnson and Jason Segel limped in at number 8 with $250,000 over the weekend.

US box office Quickview

  • Number 1 - The Marksman (2nd weekend)
  • Highest debut - Our Friend (@8)
  • Longest run - The War With Grandpa*

Remaining at the top for a second weekend is the Liam Neeson action movie directed by Robert Lorenz which takes $2.03 million, a 37% drop.

The movie has taken $6.09 Million after 2 weeks of release.

The Croods: A New Age

The animated sequel movie directed by Joel Crawford takes $1.82 Million, an 11% drop from last weekend.

The movie has taken $41.83 Million over a 9 week release.

Wonder Woman 1984

Sinking a bit faster than Warner would have expected the DC Universe sequel movie takes $1.6 Million over the weekend, a 38% drop.

The film which came out on HBO Max and cinemas over christmas has now taken $37.7 Million after 5 weeks.

News of the World

Starring Tom Hanks the movie has Oscar buzz and take $810,000 this weekend, 23% down from last weekend, giving the movie a total of $9.65 Million over 5 weeks.

Monster Hunter

Starring Milla Jovovich the video game movie adaptation takes $810,000 over the weekend, down 12% from last weekend, the movie now has $10.18 Million over 6 weeks of release.

Deadline are reporting that director Stephen Daldry has left the screen adaptation of hit stage show Wicked.

The film has been in development since at least 2016, but due to scheduling conflicts and other problems it is still in pre-production hell.

The movie was originally scheduled for release on December 20th 2019, ironically the same release date as Cats, another stage to screen adaption which was hit with a very harsh critical panning.

Universal, who own the screen rights, will still go ahead with the adaptation, but they wanted to proceed faster than Daldry was moving ahead with development, and as Deadline reports there is currently no sound stage in the UK free for production to start, and the director was keen to film in England.

There is no need to worry as there are a number of high profile directors ready to take over, including Steven Spielberg who is keen to adapt another stage show after he directed West Side Story, which has been delayed until December 2021.
