News from around the web

Coco from Disney/Pixar makes it debut at the top of this weekends bozx office with a gross of £5.2 million.

The film has been a smash hit worldwide and continues the success that Pixar has had with the likes of the Toy Story series and Finding Nemo.

Falling to second place this week after a single week at the top is Darkest Hour with a £3.3 million weekend which boosts the movies total to £10.1 million.

Steven Spielberg lets loose the first of 2 film for the first half of the year with Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep starring in The Post, debuting to the tune of £2.1 million.

Rounding out the top 5 is The Greatest Showman at 4 and Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle at 5.

Worth of a mention is Star Wars: The Last Jedi which although falling to 9 this week boosts its total to £81.4 million, its now in the top 5 grossing UK films of all time.

2018 has kicked in and as always we take time to reflect on what is coming to the cinema in the coming 12 months and list the 10 films were looking forward to.

Normally this is an easy list to conceive, but this year we have had to narrow it down from a short list of 20 movie, so some films like All The Money In The World and The Press have missed the list, not because were not looking forward to them but these 10 films we are really looking forward to.

So here we are, in release order, the list of 10 films we are looking forward to in 2018.

Coco - The new film from Pixar, and although it doesn't capture us initially as much as say Finding Nemo or Toy Story it has things about it that cant be ignored, mainly its a Pixar movie.

Fifty Shades Freed - The last in the Fifty Shades series, we loved Fifty Shades of Grey, but hated Fifty Shades Darker, but were looking forward to this although we know it will have bad dialogue and probably flop!

The Shape of Water - Guillermo del Toro latest film and one which has had the critics overly excited, could be the directors best film since Pan Labyrinth.

Tomb Raider - Were old enough to remember the original video game and still have the memory of Angelina Jole in out heads, but this is a reboot and looks gritty and exciting.

Ready Player One - You cant ignore a good sci-fi films and you certainly can ignore it when Steven Spielberg has directed the film, this has the potential for highest grossing film of the year.

Avengers Infinity War - But then there is the third Avengers movie to think about, and with the Marvel Cinematic Universe seemingly doing no wrong with audiences eager to spend money this could be a massive grossing film in 2018.

Solo A Star Wars Story - And then there is the annual (despite it only being a few months since the last one) Star Wars movie which although not part of the main saga is a film which will pull on the nostalgia of many fans and hopefully answer quite a few questions.

Deadpool 2 - There is no denying the popularity of the original Deadpool film and the inevitable sequel will pull a similar crowd, lets hope its no Kick Ass 2!

Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom - Audiences love dinosaurs and all the time these films are making big bucks Universal will deliver, follow up the 2016 origianl and fifth in the series in total, expect big money if nothing else.

Fantastic Beasts The Crimes Of Grindelwald - Suprisingly we though the original Fantastic Beasts was better than all the Harry Potter films so we have high hopes for this, and written by J.K. Rowling herself she knows this universe and how the please the fans better than anyone.

With a new Tom Hanks film in cinemas and a Dan Brown adaptation at that it was assumed that The Girl on The Train would be a one week wonder, but Inferno was not strong enough.

The Emily Blunt starring movie makes it 2 weeks at the top with The Girl on The Train with a second weekend gross of £3.4 million.

This brings the total gross of the film in the UK to £13.6 million, if you compare this to last years Gone Girl it is actually head of that films £9 million after 2 weeks.

Highest new entry of the week comes in at number 2 in the shape of Inferno from the book by Dan Brown and a sequel to The De Vinci Code and Angela and Demons.

Inferno makes in debut with £2.9 million which is the lowest of the series so far, The De Vinci Code and Angela and Demons made £9 million and £6 million respectively on their debuts.

Also new this week is Storks at number 3 and event movie Miss Saigon 25th Anniversary Performance which was a one off performance in Saturday night.

Longest running film this week is Finding Dory with 12 weeks, it is also the highest total grossing movie with £42 million, this is far higher that Finding Nemo even if you take inflated ticket prices into account.

Animation aimed at a more adult audience lands at the top of the box office chart this week as Sausage Party makes its UK debut at number 1.

With lead vocals from Seth Rogan the innuendoes fly fas in this 15 rated comedy as its grosses a good, but not great, £2.6 million.

Finding Dory has had a fantastic run at the box office, 2 spells at the top but this week falls down to number 3.

Its not a sad story thought and an excellent 6th week gross of £1.5 million brongs the films total gross in the UK to a fantastic £38 million, it has not out grossed Finding Nemo in the UK.

Also making their debut on the box office chart this week are Brotherhood at number 2 with £1.9 million and Cafe Society at number 9 with £0.5 million.

Highest grossing film on the box office this week is Finding Dory and longest run is The BFG which has spent 7 weeks on the top 10.

Next week sees the release of Ben-Hur (a remake) and Captain Fantastic as well as Don't Breathe the current American number 1.

Historical Charts

A year ago - Straight Outta Compton kept its grip at the top of the UK box office with No Escape the highest new film at 3.

Five years ago - The Inbetweeners Movie remained at the top and with a strong top 4 the highest new film was the Indian film Bodyguard at number 5.

Ten years ago - You, Me and Dupree remained at the top and with 3 new releases in the top 5 Little Man was the highest of them.

Fifteen years ago - Heath Ledger starred in A Knights Tale which made its debut at the top while Planet of The Apes fell to number 2 on its 3rd week.

Twenty years ago - There was no moving for Independence Day which kept its vice grip on the top while top new film Phenomenon landed at number 2.

Twenty five years ago - Mega hit Terminator 2: Judgment Day was still at the top of the box office while top new film Dying Young landed at number 3.

In an unusual event for the box office charts an old favourite returns to the top, Disney/Pixars Finding Dory replaces the widely criticised Suicide Squad, Dory has been on release now for 4 weeks!

We are coming to the end of the School holidays in the UK and its a time when a lot of families are back from their time away so its perhaps no surprise that the box kids film of the moment returns to the top.

A fantastic 4th weekend gross of £2.8 million takes the total gross to £32.3 million, this puts the film on a level with the original Finding Nemo from 2003.

Falling into second place after 2 weeks at the top is Suicide Squad, a £2.5 million weekend brings the total gross to an fantastic £27.6 million.

This puts the DC anti-hero film ahead of the DC superhero film Batman V Superman Dawn of Justice from earlier in the year.

Highest new film of the week is a new British institution making his movie debut, David Brent Life On The Road, and although it hasn't done as well as fellow TV turned movie Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie from earlier this year, it has debuted at 3 with £1.4 million.

The Office was a big hit on TV over 10 years ago, and is still loved by fans, but it is a challenge to get that same feeling back, especially on the big screen, David Brent is maybe not a big enough draw on his own to command his own film?

The Secret Life of Pets is still the top total grossing movie of the week with £33.7 million and the longest running film with 9 weeks.

Interesting note this week, if the chart were calculated from the full weeks taking it would have been a very different picture, Suicide Squad would have retained the top, The BFG would have been 3rd and David Brent Life on the Road would have been 6th.
