This week making its debut at the top of the UK box office is the critically acclaimed Wolverine movie Logan starring Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart.

The solo Wolverine movies have not had the best of times at either the box office or with critics, but Logan bucks that trend and gets the 78 highest debut weekend in the UK with £9.44 million.

Compared to both X-Men Origins: Wolverine and The Wolverine this is far higher with those films taking £6 million and £4 million respectively, it will do better than both those films.

The Lego Batman Movie falls to number 2 after 3 weeks at the top with a £1.5 million weekend which brings the films total gross to £24.9 million and is currently the second highest grossing movie of 2017.

Also new this week are Viceroys House which is at 3 with £0.9 million and Fist Fight at 10 with £0.4 million.

La La Land is both the longest running film on the UK box office with 8 weeks so far and the highest grossing with £29.8 million, it is also the top grossing film of 2017 so far.

Five years ago - Staying at the top was The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel for a second weekend while the top new film was This Means War at number 3.

Ten years ago - Three weeks at the top for Hot Fuzz meant the top new film was at number 2 in the form of Ghost Rider.

Fifteen years ago - Vanilla Sky held its own at the top, just about, with the top new film making its debut at number 3, Shallow Hal.

Twenty years ago - Mars Attacks made its debut at the top of the UK box office while Ransom fell to number 2 after 3 weeks on top.

Twenty five years ago - Bruce Willis took over at the top of the box office with The Last Boy Scout on its debut while The Prince of Tides fell to number 2 after a week on top.

The Lego Batman Movie may be beating Fifty Shades Darker in America and Europe but across the globe the latter is doing far better.

For a second week Fifty Shades Darker is the top movie of the week with a weekly gross of $64.6 million from 60 countries.

This brings the films total gross after a couple of weeks of release to $276.8 million, not too far behind the series first film.

The Lego Batman Movie remains in second place this week with $55 million and it is released in 63 countries, 3 more that Fifty Shades.

Highest new film of the week is right down at number 10, Fist Fight is only released in 1 country with a gross of $12 million.

It may have a been a close call last weekend with The Lego Batman Movie winning but this week the movie with bricks is the clear winner of the week.

Beating out Fifty Shades Darker for a second weekend The Lego Batman Movie takes $34 million on the Friday to Sunday chart which boosts its total to $53 million.

This is behind The Lego Movie from 2014 but is still a great total and the film should end up as one of the top grossing of the year.

Highest new film of the week is The Great Wall which enters at number 3 this week with a gross of $16.5 million over the weekend.

The Matt Damon starring movie has had plenty of hype on the build up to its release but this will be considered a relatively low opening for the big budget movie.

Also new this week is Fist Fight which lands at number 5 with an opening gross of $12 million.

Rian Johnson has directed this instalment which is no bad thing, and as with all Star Wars films the ensemble cast all return, with the recent passing of Carrie Fisher it will be a sad moment if they complete the story arc of Princess Leah, but one which is necessary.

T2 Trainspotting - 20 years after Trainspotting the guys are back for another dose of hard hitting, drug taking antics that will have us transfixed again.

Danny Boyle returns to direct with original stars Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller, Robert Carlyle and Ewen Bremner all returning.

Ghost In The Shell - Scarlett Johansson controversially stars in this live action version of the acclaimed manga animation, but judging from the trailer they have hit the right note.

Rupert Sanders directs what promises to be one hell of a ride in the special effects heavy take that potentially no one will understand.

War For The Planet of The Apes - The third in the excellent prequel films which tells the story of how earth became The Planet of The Apes.

Special effects and motion capture are now at a point where we can truly believe that these apes have personalities and intelligence.

Guardians of The Galaxy Vol 2 - Just from the trailer alone you know you want to see this and Baby Groot will be the highlight of the cinema year, and the film actually looks really good.

James Gunn returns to direct Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper in this Marvel franchise film.

Alien Covenant - Sequel to Prometheus and prequel to Alien, directed by Ridley Scott, not too much riding on this then.

Prometheus was Alien enough to be part of the series but individual enough to be a film in its own right, looking at the fist trailer for Alien Covenant this could bridge the gap really well, we hope so.

Fifty Shades Darker - The original film delivered far more than the source material dictated, and it was actually a good film, worryingly this time Sam Taylor-Johnson is not returning to direct.

James Foley is directing this instalment but Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan are returning so the chemistry should still be there in this much darker tale.

The Mummy - A reboot of the 1999 franchise which spawned 3 movies, but got worse with each film, this time Tom Cruise stars and the first trailer looks like we could have a winner on our hands.

Pitch Perfect 3 - Our guilty pleasure, the first film was one of the highlights of 2012 and although not nearly as good part 2 was still a lot of fun, time will tell if the idea is getting a little thin now.
