The last in the trilogy of Planet of The Apes prequel movies opens at the top of the Uk box office this week knocking Spider-Man Homecoming off after just a single week.

War For The Planet of The Apes which stars Woody Harrelson and Any Serkis hits the top with a weekend gross of £7.1 million, a very good gross for a critically praised film.

The trilogy of films has been constant on its debut and this does better than Rise but not quite at good as Dawn's £8 million debut.

With this in mind I'd expect this to end its run in the £30 million region.

Spider-Man Homecoming falls to number 3 this week leapfrogging over Despicable Me 3 by the tightest of margins with a £3.7 million weekend.

This brings the films total gross to £16 million after 10 days of release and is looking set to match the first Spider-Man film from 2002.

Despicable Me at number 2 took £3.8 million and has now grossed £26 million from 3 weekends of release.

For the Monday - Sunday week the top film would have been Spider-Man with a £7.4 million weekly gross with Apes second and Despicable Me 3 third.

For the third weekend running The Boss Baby is the longest running film with 15 weeks and the highest grossing with £28 million.

Historical charts

A year ago - This time last year expectations were high when the rebooted Ghostbusters hit the top on its debut knocking off The Secret Life of Pets after 3 weeks on top.

Five years ago - Ice Age: Continental Drift stayed on top for a third week while the top new film was Magic Mike at number 3.

Ten years ago - It was a rare summer release for Harry Potter as Harry Potter and The Order of The Phoenix hit the top on its debut knocking Shrek The Third down to 2.

Fifteen years ago - Scooby Doo was the top film of the week making its debut while Minority Report fell to number 2 after a week on top.

Twenty years ago - Batman and Robin stayed on top for a third weekend with the top new film Murder at 1600 landing at 3.

Twenty five years ago - Batman Returns was the top film of the week landing at number 1 on its debut while The Player fell to number 2 after 2 weeks on top.

The Dark Knight Rises hold steady at the top as Dr Seuss The Lorax gives no serious competition for the top spot.

A second week at the top for Batman and another strong one as £7,275,558 is added to the total gross bringing it to £30,551,765, after 10 days of release it's already the second highest grossing film of the year.

In comparison, the highest grossing film of 2012 so far, Avengers Assemble, had made £29,851,680 after 10 days, so Batman is just a shade in front.

Dr Seuss The Lorax was released back in March in the US and did big numbers, maybe a little disappointing then is the UK release which only manages £1,853,294, although it has got Batman, good weather and the Olympics to content with. It is the highest new film in the UK this week.

This time last year Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2 retained the top spot, now with a gross of £55,520,549 while Captain America The First Avenger was new at number 2 with £2,981,590.

Five years ago The Simpsons Movie was the highest new film with a very impressive £13,626,853 taking it to the top beating out the first Transformers movie and knocking Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix to number 3.

Ten years ago Austin Powers in Goldmember was the big new film at the top and the highest new film with £5,585,978 knocking Scooby Doo down to number 2.

Absolutely no surprise at all that The Dark Knight Rises is the biggest film of the week, and the £14 Million debut weekend is as expected.

The tragedy that took place in America on Thursday night at a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises does not seem to have affected the box office over here with a weekend take of £ 14,362,443 it is very close to to 2008's The Dark Knight which opened just north of £11 million. The best opener of the year is still Avengers Assemble nearly £16 Million.

With the release of the new Batman film there were no other new films this week but last weeks top film Ice Age Continental Drift still does the numbers and has a weekend of £ 2,112,021.

This time last year Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 was still at the top having taken £ 44,271,997 in 2 weeks while Pixars Cars 2 was the top new release with £3,541,664 at 2.

Five years ago Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was still at the top with a total gross of £30,062,094 after 2 weeks and the remake of John Walters Hairspray was the highest new film at 2 with £2,045,912.

Ten years ago Scooby Doo was still top with a gross of £9,420,817 and with the top 2 staying the same the highest new film was Stuart Little 2 at 3 with a take of £1,343,398.
