News from around the web

The much anticipated sequel to the Jurassic World series has started filming, and perhaps the Tweet from director Colin Trevorrow has revealed the title to be Dominion.

Jurassic World: Dominion is likely the title of the new movie that follows the Billion dollar plus grossing first two movies in the second Jurassic trilogy series.

After Jurassic World which was all about a new theme park, then Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom about the aftermath of the collapse of that theme park, are we now getting a hint that the dinosaurs are taking over?

The cast includes Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt from the previous films and the leads from Jurassic park Laura Dern, Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum all returning, in what capacity we dont yet know.

The new movie has kicked off filming with a release date of 21st June 2021.

2018 was another year at the US box office where Disney dominated with their Marvel franchise and Pixar hit while there was a sprinkling of Dinosaurs and a Deadpool for good measure.

Black Panther

The top film in the US in 2018 was the critically acclaimed Black Panther which was released in February and grossed over $700 million during its box office run.

Avengers Infinity War

As if that wasn't enough Disney also took the second spot of 2018 with Avengers Infinity War which was released in April and took an amazing $678 million at the US box office.

Incredibles 2

And again as if that wasn't enough for Disney they also managed the third highest grossing movie of 2018 with their Pixar studio film Incredibles 2 which was released in June and grossed over $608 million.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

Universal took the 2018 number 4 slot in the US with Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and despite the fact that it took over $400 million in the US it was far from the 3 Disney hits above it.

Deadpool 2

Finally on the top five hits of 2018 in the US is the Fox property Deadpool 2 which took $324 million, interestingly Fox's movie devision is about to be acquired by Disney, and the film had a second dip of the box office over the holiday period.

Disney's Marvel domination is set to continue into 2019 with more high profile releases, and despite the lack of any Star Wars movies (another Disney property) on this list the anticipation for 2019's Episode IX is already growing.

Here is the top 10 film of 2018 at the US box office.

  1. Black Panther - $700 million
  2. Avengers: Infinity War - $678 million
  3. Incredibles 2 - $608 million
  4. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom - $416 million
  5. Deadpool 2 - $324 million
  6. The Grinch - $265 million
  7. Mission:Impossible Fallout - $220 million
  8. Ant-Man And The Wasp - $216 million
  9. Solo: A Star Wars Story - $213 million
  10. Venom - $212 million

Marvel continue their streak of number 1 films this week with Ant-Man And The Wasp taking over at the top of the UK box office on its debut week of release.

The sequel movie starring Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly took nearly £5 million on its debut weekend which is in the same ball park as the original movie which took just over £4 million on its debut.

Holding firm at number 2 this week is Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again which made a challenge for the top but fell just shy with £4.1 million, this brings the films total gross to £39.3 million after just 3 weeks.

The sequel is running ahead of the originals gross but that film had good longevity, time will tell if this film has the same staying power.

Mission:Impossible Fallout leap frogs Mamma Mia! To number 3 this week after its number 1 debut, the film takes a very good £2.4 million second weekend to bring the films total UK gross to £13.3 million.

The Tom Cruise franchise movie is running a predictable course laid out by the series and could well end up with a similar total gross.

Incredibles 2 is at number 4 this week with £2.3 million for a total gross of £39 million, this is far ahead of the original film but there is a 14 year gap with ticket price increases.

If you compare ticket sales then both films are running at very similar numbers to each other with about 4 million sales each.

Finishing off the top 5 is Hotel Transylvania 3 Summer Vacation which takes £1.4 million for a £7.7 million total after 2 weeks of release.

Highest total grossing movie of the week is Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom with just over £40 million after 9 weeks of release.

The Tom Cruise franchise movie Mission:Impossible Fallout is still pulling in the crowds at the world box office this week as it holds of competition from Chinese films Hello Mr. Billionaire and Along With The Gods The Last 49 Days.

This weeks global gross for the 6th Mission:Impossible movie is $111 million from 57 countries which brings the films total gross globally to $329.4 million.

This means the film has nearly made as much as the lowest grossing of the series Mission:Impossible III and halfway to the top grossing film in the series Mission:Impossible Rogue Nation.

China's Hello Mr. Billionaire holds strong at number 2 this week with $65 million dollars from just China, this brings the films total gross to $289.9 million.

Highest new global hit of the week is Along With The Gods The Last 49 Days which takes $37.6 million from just 5 countries.

Disneys Christopher Robin is also new this week at number 4, it takes $29 million on its global debut from 19 countries while Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again drops to number 5 with $28 million from 54 countries bringing the films total global gross to $230.5 million.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is the highest total grossing film on the global box office this week with $1.2 billion and is still on release in 64 countries.

At the UK box office this weekend Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom went back to the top of the chart after a week away, it took an incredible £2 million on its fourth weekend.

The film has now taken £34 million in the UK, the first Jurassic World by this point had taken £54 million so the sequel is quite a way behind.

Falling to number 2 after a week at the top is Ocean's 8, a weekend gross of £1.2 million brings the films UK gross to £6.8 million after 2 weekends.

highest new film of the week is Sicario 2 Soldado which enters at number 3 with a weekend gross of just under £700,000.

A couple of other new films finish off the top 5 in the shape of comedy Tag at number 4 with and Indian film Ssnju at number 5.
