Maybe the reception was a little more muted than Warner Bros. would have liked but Godzilla: King Of The Monsters still makes its debut at number 1 on the US box office.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters

The sequel to 2014's Godzilla hits the US box office at the top with a weekend gross of $49 million which compared to the original is nearly half its $93 million debut.

Warner have big plans for the monster series and this is maybe a warning shot that the western movie fan is not as interested as those in China for example where the film had a monster opening.

The film is also lower than 2017's Kong: Skull Island and with a Kong and Godzilla matchup coming in 2020 there are warning signs.

Aladdin

Disneys live action remake starring Will Smith falls to number 2 this week with $42.3 million which gives the film a $185 million total gross after 2 weeks.

Rocketman

Making its debut at number 3 this week is the Elton John bio-pic which takes a respectable $25 million.

The films cinema run will be compared to Bohemian Rhapsody, although this film has debuted far lower than the Freddy Mercury film despite having better reviews.

Ma

Starring Octavia Spencer this suspense horror makes its debut at number 4 with a fairly muted $18.2 million opening.

John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum

Falling to the number 5 spot after 3 weeks of release is the Keanu Reeves action films which takes $11.1 million for a $125.7 million total.

Avengers: Endgame

The Marvel movie is the top total gross film on the US box office this week and after 6 weeks has taken an incredible $815.5 million.

Dumbo

Despite being a smaller hit than Disney are used to the Tim Burton live action movie remake has been on the US box office for 10 weeks and has taken $113.7 million.

Entering at the top of the global box office this week Monster movie Godzilla: King Of The Monsters which leaves Aladdin to have a single week at number 1 (so far) as it falls to number 2 in its second weekend.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters

The big monster battle movie starring the Japanese superhero Godzilla fights its way to the top of the global box office this week, and does it with some ease.

Taking $179 million from 76 countries on its debut it may be at the top of the global box office but compared to the previous Godzilla movie released in 2014 it way below.

Godzilla is having a battle with King Kong early next year so in comparison this film is also lower than 2017's Kong: Skull Island.

Aladdin

The Disney live action blockbuster flew to the top of the box office last weekend but sinks to number 2 this week with $120.6 million from 55 countries.

This pushes the film total global gross to $445.9 million after 2 weeks of release.

Rocketman

With the films release across more of the globe the Elton John fantasy bio-pic goes to number 3 with a weekend global take of $44.2 million having expanded to 41 countries.

The film now has a global total gross of $56.2 million, in comparison this is far below the second weekend gross of Bohemian Rhapsody.

Parasite

At number 4 this week is Chinese film Parasite which makes its global debut with $24.5 million from just 2 countries.

John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum

The third John Wick movie falls to number 4 this week with a gross of $23.8 million from 78 countries, this pushes the films total global gross to $221.6 million.

Disney have done well in recent years with their live action versions of classic cartoons and this week the best of all animations gets the treatment and Beauty and The Beast opens to a massive debut.

Taking nearly £20 million on its first weekend of release it is the 8th top weekend in the UK of all time and is the highest opening outside of a franchise film.

It will be interesting to see if this is just that the animation is considered one of Disneys ultimate classics, or if the public are simply enjoying these live conversions.

Its hard comparing this to the 1992 original as its been 25 years but that film took £8.4 million on its opening, and took £20 million in total.

Adjusting for inflation the 1992's opening would be about £22 million with a total of about £52 million, potentially very similar to this live action remake.

Falling to number 2 this week is Kong: Skull Island, a £2.7 million second weekend brigs the films total to £11 million, the film is running just above its stablemate Godzilla.

Also new this week is American horror hit Get Out which lands at number 3 this week with a better than expected £2.1 million.

Longest running film on the UK box office this week is Lion starring Dev Patel which has now been around for 9 weeks while the highest total grossing movie is Sing which is still at 7 and has now grossed £28 million.
