$0 Making its debut at the top of the North American box office is the long awaited sequel to James Cameron's 2009 movie Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water.
Highest new movie this weekend
Its been a long road to the sequel of the highest grossing movie of all time but this weekend director James Cameron finally delivers his 3 hour movie and it, as expected, hits the ground running.
The movie takes $134 Million on its debut weekend, it takes 88% of the total top 15 this weekend and it the 6th highest grossing movie in the month of December in America.
Compared to the original Avatar this movie is considerably higher than the 2009 opening weekend of $77 Million, even when adjusted for inflation.
Avatar was a slow burner at the box office, and this sequel is getting positive word of mouth, so the road ahead into 2023 looks good.
The David Harbour directed movie which is Santa Claud crossed with Home Alone with violent results remains at number 2 this weekend with a gross of $5 Million, a 36% drop over last weekend.
THis gives the movie a total US gross of $34.9 Million over 3 weeks of release, which comparing to Krampus from 2015, that movie had taken $35.1 Million 3 weeks into its run.
Dropping to number 3 this weekend after 5 weeks at the top is the sequel movie to the 2018 film Black Panther which takes $5.4 Million, a 52% over last weekend.
This gives the movie a total US gross of $418.9 Million after 6 weeks of release, lower than the first movie but still a good gross for 2022.
The movie is now the second highest grossing movie of the year behind Top Gun Maverick, how long it will star there with Avatar: The Way of Water coming up the charts fast remains to be seen.
Despite Disney pulling their latest animated feature from cinemas far earlier than expected the movie only drops to number 4 this weekend with $2.2 Million, a 42% drop over last weekend.
THe movie has now taken $33.7 Million after 4 weeks of release, considerably lower than the 2021 Encanto which was at $81.4 Million 4 weeks into its run.
Dropping to 5 on its 5th weekend is the Ralph Finnes fine dining movie which takes $1.7 Million over the weekend, a 39% drop over last week.
The movie has taken a reasonable $32.1 Million in total over its 5 weeks of release.
As the world awaits the new Avatar movie released this coming Friday Black panther: Wakanda Forever spends a 5th weekend at the top of the North American box office as the top 5 stays the same as last weekend!
The highest new movie comes in at number 13 as the critically acclaimed The Whale~2022 takes $360,000 on limited release and The Mean One at 15 with $188,523.
5 weeks in for the Black Panther sequel and another weekend at the top of the North American box office as the movie takes $11 Million, a small 37% drop.
This pushes the total gross up to $409.8 Million over its 5 weeks of release which makes it the 3rd top movie of 2022.
The first movie took $26.6 Million on its fifth weekend for a total of $605 Million.
The bloodfest that is Santa Claus meets Home Alone remains in the runner up spot for a second weekend with $8.6 Million, a 35% drop.
This gives the movie a $26.6 Million total after 2 weekends of release which comparing it Krampus from 2015 which had taken $28.5 Million after 2 weeks its very close.
Disney's latest animated tale remains at 3 this weekend with $3.6 Million, a reasonable 29% drop over last weekend.
A $30.4 Million total after 4 weeks of release is causing Disney to put the animated feature on Disney+ sooner rather than later and will be removing from cinemas in the coming weeks.
Comparing it to last years Encanto it way lower than the $71 Million that movie took after 3 weeks.
The fine dining movie from director Mark Mylod is at 4 again this weekend with $2.7 Million, a 22% drop over last weekend.
The movie has now taken $29 Million over its 4 weeks of release.
The flying based movie starring Jonathan Majors is at 5 this weekend with $1.99 Million, a low 27% drop over last weekend.
This gives the movie a total of $16.9 Million after 3 weeks of release.
This weekend at the US box office Black Panther: Wankanda Forever remained on top for another week while the top new movie was the Christmas themed Violent Night at 2.
Lower down the box office I Heard the Bells was new at 6 with $1.8 Million and HIT: The 2nd Case is new at 12 with $600,000.
New at 13 this weekend is The Quintessential Quintuplets Movie with $502,000 and finally Top Gun: Maverick is back in cinemas and takes $700,000 over the weekend to push its US gross to $717.3 Million.
Spending a 4th weekend at the top of the North American box office is the sequel Marvel movie which takes $17.5 Million, a 61% drop over last weekend.
This gives the Black Panther sequel a total US gross of $393.7 Million and is now the 3rd top movie of 2022 in North America having just taken Jurassic World: Dominion.
The movie is well below Black Panther which by this point in its box office run had taken over $500 Million but it only has just over $17 Million to go before beating Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness to be the top Marvel movie, and superhero movie, of 2022.
Highest new movie this weekend
Highest new entry of the weekend goes to the Christmas themed movie about a bad ass Santa who saves a family being held for ransom in their house.
The movie directed by Tommy Wirkola and starring David Harbour lands at number 2 this weekend with a gross of $13.3 Million.
Not bad for a Christmas horror based movie, in comparison Krampus from 2015 landed at the same time of year with a debut gross of $16.2 Million.
Disney's latest animated movie is struggling on the box office and this week falls to number 3 with $4.9 Million, a large 74% drop over last weekend.
The movie has taken just $25 Million on its 2 week run at the box office, Encanto released the same time of year in 2021 had taken $57.9 Million 2 weeks into its run.
Jumping back up the chart to number 4 this week is the Ralph Fiennes starring fine dining movie which takes $3.5 Million, a modest 35% drop over last weekend.
This gives the movie a total North American box office total of $24.7 Million after 3 weeks of release.
Finally on this weeks to 5 is the J.D. Dillard directed flying movie which drops to number 5 with $2.7 Million, a 69% drop over last week.
The movie has taken $13.8 Million after 2 weeks of release.
At the UK box office this week, Friday, 31st May 2019, there is 3 new releases looking to take your attention at the local multiplex and break into the box office chart next week.
First up at cinemas this week is Sci-Fi movie Godzilla: King Of The Monsters directed by Michael Dougherty who also directed Krampus in 2015 which grossed £1,184,159.
It stars Kyle Chandler who last starred in First Man and Vera Farmiga who last appeared in The Front Runner.
Next on the new release schedule is Booksmart, this new Comedy movie stars Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein.
The film is brought to us by new director Olivia Wilde.
Also out this week is Ma which is directed by Tate Taylor who directed Pretty Ugly People in 2008.
It stars Octavia Spencer and Diana Silvers.

No surprise to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens remain at the top of the video sales chart this week.
Destined to be one of the top selling films of the year, the home video release of the top film ever in the UK is still selling is large quantities.
Highest new film of the week is the Tina Fey and Amy Poehler co starring film Sisters.
Sisters was released at the UK box office the same weekend as The Force Awakens, and did quite well considering with an opening weekend of £1.2 million.
The film did only hang around for 4 weeks in total and during that time took a small £2.6 million.
Despite the good reviews the film did do that well, but it was in a time when the world was gripped in Star Wars fever and nothing else really mattered.
Also new this week are 2 other new releases: Joy is new at 3, Exposed is new at number 7, IP Man 3 enters at number 10 and Krampus is new at number 12.
