It has been over 12 years since the Synderverse Man of Steel it cinemas with Henry Cavill as Superman and a lot has changed in the DC Cinematic Universe since then.

Superman~2025 from director and current DCEU boss James Gunn hits the top of the UK box office on its debut weekend with a solid nearly £7 Million weekend gross.

Compared to Man of Steel from 2013 this is lower with that movie taking £11 Million on its debut.

Comparing it to other Superman movies, its higher that the 2006 Bryan Singer movie Superman Returns which scraped in just over £4 Million and the classic 1978 Superman starring Christopher Reeves took just over a million on its debut which would be just over £4 Million adjusted for inflation - but cinema was very different back then.

Falling to number 2 this weekend after a single weekend at the top is Jurassic World: Rebirth which has taken over £19 Million after just 2 weekends in cinemas.

Veteran actor Tom Cruise made came to the attention of most people in the 1986 movie Top Gun and despite a number of attempts to bring a sequel to the big screen it has taken 36 years to make it.

The movie opens over memorial weekend which is often considered the start of the summer season for movies and takes an incredible $124 Million on its debut.

This is not only the top grossing movie over the holiday weekend but incredibly the top debut for Tom Cruise.

The movie has instantly become the 6th top movie in North America for 2022 but will most likely finish at least top 3.

Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness

The MCU movie from Disney has been around now for 4 weeks and gets push from the top after a successful 3 week run where it grossed an amazing $370 Million at the US box office.

This weekend the Sam Raimi directed movie take $16.4 Million, a 49% drop over last weekend, it does take over from The Batman as the top movie of 2022.

The Bobs Burgers Movie

Like The Simpsons before them, Bob's Burgers makes the leap from television to the big screen and lands at number 3 this weekend.

The movie take a respectable $12.6 Million over the memorial day holiday, and with good reviews and school holidays on the horizon, like The Bad Guys this could hang around for a while.

Downton Abbey: A New Era

The sequel movie based on the British Aristocracy falls to number 4 on its second weekend of release with $5.9 Million, a big 63% drop over last weekend, giving the movie a $28.4 Million total.

UK box office top 5 weekend breakdown 28th - 30th January 2022

Sing 2

The animated sequel to director Garth Jennings 2017 original Sing lands on this weeks box office at the top with a gross £6.8 Million.

This is lower than the first movies debut gross which was £10 Million, but that is most likely down to the pandemic as we are still seeing lower box office returns on the whole.

The movie has been a smash hit across the globe and in the UK the original was a smash hit, this will hang around for quite a while, it is already the second top movie of 2022 in the UK.

Belfast

Kenneth Branagh's movie never made it to the top spot in the UK but it is proving to be a big hit regardless as it spends another weekend at number 2.

The film takes £1.8 Million over the weekend pushing its total to £6 Million, and making it the 3rd top movie of 2022.

Spider Man: No Way Home

The movie spent 6 weeks at number 1 over the 2021 Christmas and new year period but this week leaps over Belfast to number 3 as it looses the number 1 crown to Sing 2.

On its 7th weekend the movie takes £1.7 Million, a 24% drop over last week, giving it a total UK gross of £90 Million.

It is the top movie of 2022 and is the 6th top movie of all time as it tries to beat the £93 Million taken by Avatar.

Scream

Falling to number 4 this weekend is the horror franchise movie which takes £788,123 on its 3rd weekend of release, a 37% drop over last weekend, giving the movie a total in the UK of £6.1 Million.

Nightmare Alley

Falling to 5 this weekend after its debut is the Guillermo del Toro directed movie which takes £330,830, a 40% drop from last week, giving the movie a total in the UK of £1,2 Million.

The movie could end up being one of the famed directors lowest grossing films in the UK.

The movie has now grossed $352.4 Million after 4 weeks of release and is the 8th top movie of 2021.

No Time To Die

The latest Bond movie falls to number 3 this weekend with a take of $44.9 Million from 73 countries, a 43% drop over last weekend.

The movie has now gone over the $500 Million milestone at the global box office after 4 weeks of release and is the 5th top movie of 2021.

The Chinese mega smash movie falls to number 4 this weekend with $31.9 Million from just 1 country, a 56% drop from the previous weekend.

The movie has now taken an amazing $814 Million, and from the single location, the movie is still the second top movie globally in 2021 but by next weekend it should be the top movie of the year.
