This week marvel proved they can add new characters to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in style by taking the latest addition to the top of the UK box office.

With a £9.2 million opening it is very good for a new IP in the Marvel series, in comparison Ant-Man made £4 million on its opening.

With Doctor Strange hitting the top, last week top film, Trolls, falls to number 2, a second weekend take of £3.5 million sees the film get to £ 14 million after 10 days.

Bridget Jones's Baby is the top total grossing film on the chart at the moment with £46.6 million and has out grossed all the other Bridget Jones films.

The BFG is the longest running film, the Steven Spielberg film has now been on the chart for 14 weeks.

Historical Charts

A year ago - Spectre made its debut at the top of the box office and because the highest debuting film of all time while Hotel Transylvania 2 fell to number 2.

Five years ago - The Adventures of Tintin The Secret of The Unicorn made its debut a the top knocking off Paranormal Activity 3 which fell to 2.

Ten years ago - Saw III was the top new film of the week making its debut at the top, it knocked off The Departed which fell to number 3.

Fifteen years ago - American Pie 2 remained at the top for a second weekend while Legally Blonde was the top new film at number 2.

Twenty years ago - Dragonheart stayed at the top and with nothing of note being released Dracula Dead and Loving It was the top new film at number 6.

Twenty five years ago - Dead Again made its debut at the top of the box office, it knocked off City Slickers which fell to number 2.
