The tough year for cinemas across the UK continues but once again Warner Bros. release a major blockbuster in this market, this time the DC Universe movie Wonder Woman 1984, which after may delays in 2020 makes its debut at the top.

Also new inside the top 5 is Come Away which makes its debut at number 4 and then dropping outside the top 10 there is the cinematic showing of The Nutcracker: Bolshoi Ballet 2020 at 13 and perhaps a little disappointing the Diane Lane and Kevin Costner US hit Let Him Go at 15.

The top 15 movies is totally dominated once again by Christmas catalogue films which makes up 51% of this week chart.

Wonder Woman 1984

Warner Bros. have released 2 potential blockbusters during the pandemic, Tenet back in August which was supposed to re-invigorate the box office and now this DC Universe movie, no other studio has done this, and looking at the box office tickets you can perhaps see why!

The Wonder Woman sequel opens in the UK during a very difficult time for cinemas as a majority of the country is in a forces lockdown, and cinemas that are open can only fill to about 25% because of the pandemic which is just getting worse.

The movie opens to a weekend box office of £846,435 (since its Wednesday openeing) although this is 70% of the total weekend marketplace.

The movie gets a VOD release in the UK mid January.

Elf

Last weeks number 1 movie falls to number 2 this week with £83,623, a 15% drop from last weekend giving the movie a total gross since release of £17 Million.

Home Alone

Another Christmas classic and for number 1 falls to 3 this weekend with £56,261, a 36% drop over last weekend, which gives the film a nearly £10 Million total since its 1990 release.

Come Away

Second highest debut of the weekend is at 4, this Brenda Chapman directed drama about some siblings falling into a world of fantasy and imagination after a family tragedy takes £42,834 on its first weekend.

Love Actually

Finishing off the top 5 is the british Christmas classic from write director Richard Curtis which takes £20,430 over the weekend, 52% down from last weekend, its total is now £36.9 Million since its 2003 release.

Released in the UK this weekend, Friday, 18th December 2020, there are 5 new releases looking to take your attention and where available get you into your local cinema to try and knock Elf from the top of the UK box office.

Wonder Woman 1984

  • The movie is directed by Patty Jenkins
  • Patty Jenkins also directed Wonder Woman in 2017 which grossed £22.2 Million in the UK and grossed $821.8 Million globally.
  • It stars Gal Gadot who last starred in Between Two Ferns: The Movie (2019).
  • The film also stars Chris Pine who last appeared in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse (2018).

Arkansas

  • This new release stars Liam Hemsworth who's last film was Isn't It Romantic (2019)

For the first time on the US box office since Tenet made its debut back in August The Croods: A New Age makes a decent weekend debut.

The release schedule outside the new animated movie is next to nothing and the only other new releases this week are a couple of catalogue movies, the excellent National Lampoons Christmas Vacation at 9 and Disney's Frozen at 12.

The Croods: A New Age

Dreamworks follow up their 2013 movie The Croods which took $187.1 Million at the US box office with this sequel which Universal has released while the pandemic is still causing cinemas to shut their doors.

The movie still manages to take a very good $9.7 Million on its debut weekend which is second only to Tenet in the months since the pandemic effected the box office.

Freaky

Falling from the top after 2 weeks is the Vince Vaughn starring horror/comedy which takes $770,000, a 40% drop from last weekend.

The movie has now grossed $7.01 Million in the US over 3 weeks of release.

The War With Grandpa

Surprise hit on the last few months is the Robert De Niro starring movie which takes $643,937 over the weekend, only 14% down from last week.

The movie is showing incredible staying power and has grosses $17.25 Million over its 8 weeks of release.

Let Him Go

4 weeks on the the Dianne Lane starring movie falls to 4 with $453,000, 37% down, for a total of $8.73 Million after 4 weeks.

Come Play

Falling to 5 this week is Jacob Chase's horror movie which takes $387,000, 31% down from last weekend, for a $8.83 Million 5 week total.

With no major releases over the last weekend the horror comedy Freaky remained at the top of the US box office for a second weekend.

The highest entry on the chart was the re-release of 1995's The Santa Clause from Disney while the highest new movie of the week was Vanguard at number 7.

Also new this week is The Last Vermeer at number 9 and Gekijouban Fate/Stay Night: Heaven's Feel - III. Spring Song at number 10, while outside the top 10 Buddy Games came in at 13 and The Forgotten Carols at number 15.

Directed by Christopher Landon and starring Kathryn Newton and Vince Vaughn the horror comedy movie spends its second weekend at the top with a weekend gross of $1.22 Million, a 66% drop from last weekend.

This gives the movie a total gross in North America of $5.59 Million after 2 weeks of play.

The War With Grandpa

The surprise hit of late 2020, starring Robert De Niro, climbs back to number 3 as movie takes $733,067 over the weekend, 44% down from last weekend.

This gives the movie a total American gross of $16.18 Million after 7 weeks of release.

Let Him Go

The Kevin Costner former number 1 movie falls to number 3 this weekend with $710,000, 59% drop from last weekend, for a 3 week total of $7.92 Million.

Come Play

Another former number 1 movie remaining at number 4 this week takes $550,000 for the weekend, 49% down, for a total of $8.05 Million after 4 weeks.

The Santa Clause

Disney release another of their catalogue movies which makes its way into the top 5, at 5, as the Tim Allen Christmas movie takes $461,000 over the weekend, the movie has taken $145.29 Million since its release in 1995.
