UK weekend box office top 5 breakdown 13th - 15th January 2023

Now on its 5th weekend of release the sequel movie takes £4.7 Million over the weekend, a very good 29% drop over last weekend.

The Avatar sequel continues to push its gross towards the £100 Million mark in the UK as it passes the £60 Million mark with a total gross of £63 Million.

The movie is the top grossing film of 2022 so far and is now the 21st top movie ever in the UK, it will enter the top 20 by next weekend and maybe even enter the top 15.

Highest new movie this weekend

The start of a new horror franchise as director Gerard Johnstone brings us the story of an AI doll that will do anything to protect her owner.

The movie makes its UK debut at number 2 with a gross of £2.3 Million which makes it the 5th top movie of 2022.

Also new at number 3 this weekend is the new movie from the critically acclaimed director Sam Mandes and starring the British National Treasure that is Oscar winner Olivia Coleman.

The movie has had a hard release schedule across the globe but makes an impressive debut here in the UK with £1.7 Million on its debut weekend.

Falling to number 4, from 2, this week is the Whitney Houston bio-pic which takes £1.1 Million on its 3rd weekend of release, a 21% drop over last week.

The movie has taken a fairly respectable total gross of £8.2 Million in the UK and its the second top movie if 2022 after 2 weeks of the year.

Matilda: The Musical

The former number 1 movie falls to number 5 this weekend with £857,293, a 27% drop over last week.

The movie has now taken a fantastic £25 Million at the UK box office as it starts its decent down the chart.

As the year 2023 rolls on into January there are movie new releases this weekend, but none were good enough to topple Avatar: The Way of Water from the top of the UK box office.

The highest new movie of the weekend is A Man Called Otto which is new at 4, also in the top 5 is the latest cinema event Andre Rieu: In Dublin 2023.

Further down the chart is Till which is new at 6 with £327,496, the action movie The Enforcer~2022 is new at 12 with £71,836 and finally there is a re-entry at 15 for Shrek, the 2001 animated hit movie which take £44,199.

UK weekend box office top 5 breakdown 6th - 8th January 2023

The sequel movie to Avatar takes £5.8 Million on its 4th weekend of release which is a small 25% drop over last weekend.

The movie has taken a UK total of £57.2 Million, which almost by default makes it the top movie of 2023, and although its not the top movie released in 2022 it is catching Top Gun: Maverick and has grossed almost the same at that movie 4 weeks into its box office run.

The original movie has taken £41 Million 4 weeks into its run so this movie is well ahead of that and is set to out gross the 2009 film.

The bio-pic of Whitney Houston remains at number 2 for a second weekend with a gross of £1.3 Million, a 58% drop over its debut last weekend.

This gives the movie a total gross of £6.2 Million after 2 weekends of release.

The musical version of the Roald Dahl story Matilda remains at number 3 this weekend with a gross of £1.1 Million, a drop of 42%.

The movie has been a massive hit in the UK with a 3 week run at the top and after 7 weeks, all inside the top 3, the movie has taken £23.9 Million.

Highest new movie this weekend

Highest new movie of the weekend is the latest from Tom Hanks which is a remake of the Swedish movie A Man Called Ove from 2015.

THe movie takes £1.1 Million on its debut weekend of release in the UK.

No stranger to the box office, Andre Rieu's latest live concert offering where he is performing live in Dublin lands at number 5 this week.

The event movie takes £715,986 in screenings starting from Saturday 7th which is about on par with the violinists last concert Andre Rieu's 2022 Maastricht Concert: Happy Days Are Here Again which took £798,706 in August of 2022.

UK weekend box office top 5 breakdown 30th - 1st January 2023

Spending a third week on top of the UK box office is the sequel movie to Avatar which takes £7.6 Million, a 35% increase on its Christmas weekend total.

The movie has now taken a magnificent £44.9 Million at the UK box office after 3 weeks of release.

It is £12 Million ahead of Avatar at the same point of its run and for many years that was the top grossing movie of all time in the UK.

The movie is the 3rd top grossing film of 2022, but is fast catching Top Gun: Maverick and will likely be the top grossing movie released in 2022 before the end of its run.

Highest new movie this weekend

The bio-pic of Whitney Houston starring Naomi Ackie and directed by Kasi Lemmons got released on Boxing Day this year and lands at number 2 on the UK box office.

The movie takes £3.3 Million on its debut despite getting quite a panning from critics.

The movie is looking for Oscar glory which if it achieves could boost the gross quite a but especially around the February window, and even more so if it wins!

Matilda: The Musical

Falling to number 2 this weekend is the musical version of the Roald Dahl story of Matilda which takes £2 Million over the New Year weekend, a 45% increase over last weekend.

The former number 1 movie has now taken £20.8 Million over its 6 weeks of release.

The sequel movie to Black Panther climbs back up the box office to number 4 this weekend with a gross of £436,156, a 54% increase over last weekend.

The movies weekend gross being so low and the movie still climbing to number 4 is a reflection of the current state of the box office and shows how much Avatar: The Way of Water is taking from the box office.

The movie has taken a total of £33.2 Million in the UK and is well below that of the first movie which had taken nearly £50 Million 8 weeks into its run.

Disney's latest animated movie, which had been considered a relative flop at the box officem, climbs to number 5 this weekend with a gross of £280,777, a 49% increase.

The movie has grossed a total of £3.1 Million at the UK box office which is about half that of Disney's previous movie Encanto.

Remaining at the top over the Christmas weekend in the sequel movie Avatar: The Way of Water and with no big new releases this week the high new film comes in at number 12, the Indian Hindi-language movie Cirkus takes £72,006.

UK weekend box office top 5 breakdown 23rd - 25th December 2022

The sequel movie to 2009's Avatar remains at the top for a second weekend with a weekend gross of just less than £5 Million, a 58% drop over last weekend, but taken into consideration cinemas were closed on Sunday, Christmas Day, this is higher than would normally have been.

The movie has now taken just over £25 Million over 10 days of release, which is higher than the original Avatar which has taken $18 Million 10 days into its run.

No doubt the movie will be one of the top movies released in 2022 by the time it finishes its run well into 2023, comparing it to the top movie of 2022, Top Gun: Maverick that movie took &pond;10 Million on its second weekend and £38 Million after 10 days, it has taken over £83 Million in total.

Matilda: The Musical

The movie version of the stage version of the film version of Matilda remains at number 2 this weekend with £1.1 Million, a small 14% drop over last weekend.

This gives the movie a total gross in the UK fo £16 Million after 5 weeks of release.

The highest Christmas movie this weekend is the 2003 all star ensable directed by Richard Curtis which takes £408,178 from only a handful of screen, a 95% increase from last weekend.

The re-release of the movie has taken £651,745 while the movie has taken £36.2 Million at the UK box office in total.

Another seasonal re-release is at number 4 this weekend as the Will Ferrell starring movie directed by Jon Favreau which takes £252,060 this weekend, a 52% increase.

This gives the movie a £1.7 Million re-release total, and a £16.5 Million UK box office total.

Falling to number 4 this weekend is the violent Santa movie which takes £246,399 one its 4th weekend of release, a 30% drop over last weekend.

The movie has now taken a total of £3.3 Million at the UK box office.
