The box office is officially swinging back into action. This weekend, Sony and Marvel Studios are finally launching the highly anticipated Spider-Man: Brand New Day across the UK. Thanks to Wednesday and Thursday preview screenings, the web-slinger has already scooped up an astonishing £5.82 million.

That jaw-dropping figure locks it in as the second-highest pre-screening take in UK cinema history. The ultimate box office crown is still safely held by Avengers: Endgame, which brought in a massive £11.9 million during its 2019 debut.

Beating the Avengers Across the Atlantic

While Spidey couldn't quite topple Earth's Mightiest Heroes in the UK, it absolute crushed them in North America. Spider-Man: Brand New Day completely rewrote the history books by pulling in $72 million over its Thursday previews. That effortlessly bypassed Avengers: Endgame, which previously held the record at $60 million.

With massive hype following Peter Parker's new grounded reality, the film is currently tracking toward a monumental global opening weekend. Some bullish predictions even suggest a worldwide debut pushing past $900 million.

Taking over at the top of the UK home entertainment big sellers this week is the 2014 remake of Robocop.

Robocop 2014 was released at UK cinemas early February this year making the number 2 spot on it's debit week, beaten by Mr. Peabody and Sherman, when it grossed £2.4 million.

Over a 4 week period on the box office it grossed £7.7 million and never climbed higher than it's number 2 debut spot.

Last weeks top film, Jack Ryan Shadow Recruit, has a hefty fall down the chart to number 8 this week after it's debut last week.

There are 5 other new releases this week - The Monuments Men at 2 - Lone Survivor at 3 - Last Vegas at 5 - Delivery Man at 9 - Cuban Fury at 13 -

In the US this week lego bricks ruled the box office as the Danish company take the popularity of their plastic to the US cinemas.

With a weekend take of $69 million The Lego Movie had no real contenders and easily beat the next new entry at two, The Monument Men which took $23 million.

Last weeks top film, Ride Along, falls to number 3.
