Audiences across the UK can't get enough of Belle and her beast as the Disney live action films scores a fantastic second weekend, Power rangers is the top new film at number 2.

A second weekend gross of £12.3 million for Beauty and The Beast is something most films would be happy to have as their debut weekend gross and would be in the top 100 highest grossers.

This brings the films total gross over 10 days to nearly £40 million and makes it the top grossing film of the year so far, overtaking La La Land.

With this type of momentum there is a chance it could end up being the top film of the year, although there are some big hitters coming later and a massive film at the tend of the year.

Power Rangers make their debut at number 2 this week in their revamped, re-booted, big budget incarnation to the tune of £1.5 million.

There was one other Power Rangers movie, back in 1995, based on the TV show it had the full title of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers The Movie and debuted in the UK to the tune of £1.3 million.

If we take inflation into account the 1995 film did far better and would today have debuted to the tune of £3.2 million.

Worth noting is that if the chart were counted for the whole week rather than just Friday - Sunday Power Rangers would have been at number 5 this week.

Also new this week is The Lost City of Z debuting at 7 with £0.28 million and CHiPs at number 8 with £0.2 million.

Longest running film this week is The Lego Batman Movie which has been around now for 7 weeks and the top grossing movie, after just 10 days is Beauty and The Beast.

A year ago - Batman V Superman Dawn of Justice made its long awaited debut a the top of the box office knocking King Fu Panda to number 3.

Five years ago - The first of The Hunger Games movies was unleashed on the world and hit the top on its debut weekend, it knocked The Devil Inside down to number 4.

Ten years ago - Zack Snyder brought us his big screen cinematic style in 300 which debuted at the top knocking Norbit down to number 4.

Fifteen years ago - Ali G Indahouse made its debut at the top of the box office, it knocked Ocean’s Eleven down to number 3 after 5 weeks on top.

Twenty years ago - The speacial edition of Star Wars made its debut at the top of the UK box office, it knocked The English Patient down to number 2.

Twenty five years ago - Cape fear remained at the top for a third weekend, it kept off Bugsy which debuted at number 2.

Disney have done well in recent years with their live action versions of classic cartoons and this week the best of all animations gets the treatment and Beauty and The Beast opens to a massive debut.

Taking nearly £20 million on its first weekend of release it is the 8th top weekend in the UK of all time and is the highest opening outside of a franchise film.

It will be interesting to see if this is just that the animation is considered one of Disneys ultimate classics, or if the public are simply enjoying these live conversions.

Its hard comparing this to the 1992 original as its been 25 years but that film took £8.4 million on its opening, and took £20 million in total.

Adjusting for inflation the 1992's opening would be about £22 million with a total of about £52 million, potentially very similar to this live action remake.

Falling to number 2 this week is Kong: Skull Island, a £2.7 million second weekend brigs the films total to £11 million, the film is running just above its stablemate Godzilla.

Also new this week is American horror hit Get Out which lands at number 3 this week with a better than expected £2.1 million.

Longest running film on the UK box office this week is Lion starring Dev Patel which has now been around for 9 weeks while the highest total grossing movie is Sing which is still at 7 and has now grossed £28 million.

A year ago - Staying at the top was Kung Fu Panda 3 while to the top new film of the week was 10 Cloverfield Lane at number 2.

Five years ago - Horror film The Devil Inside was the top new film of the week making its debut at number 1 while John Carter fell from the top to number 4.

Ten years ago - Norbit stayed at the top for a second weekend while the top new film was Premonition which landed at number 2.

Fifteen years ago - Ocean's Eleven spent its fifth weekend at the top while the highest new film was Thir13en Ghosts which made its debut at number .

Twenty years ago - Oscar winning The English Patient was the top new film at number 1 while Jerry Maguire fell to number 2 after a week at the top.

Twenty five years ago - Cape Fear spent a second week at the top while Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistle Stop Café was the top new film entering at number 2.

It was a claws out at this weekends box office as Kong Skull Island and Logan fought it out for the top spot and the new relese of Kong won the battle.

From the same production team that brought us Godzilla in 2014 Kong Skull Island is set in the same universe and is set to start a "monsters" universe similar to that of the Marvel and DC cinematic universes.

Kong opens similar to Godzilla with just over £6 million, but the film was far better received than Godzilla with the critics with a surprise amount of praise for the monster film.

Godzilla went on to gross £17 million in the UK and there is nothing to suggest this wont do similar if not better.

Logan falls into second place this week with £3.8 million after a single week at the top, this brings the films total gross to £16 million after 10 days of release.

This means that on its second weekend the film is already the best of the solo Wolverine movies and it still has plenty of milage left.

A couple of interesting things to note this week, if the chart were taken on a Monday - Sunday then Logan would have still been the top film.

Also Moulin Rouge which is on a Secret Cinema run at the moment and is number 13 on the weekend chart would have been number 4 with £2 million for the week.

There are no other new released in the top 10 this week but Elle makes a new entry at number 11 with £0.2 million and Dancer is new at 12 also with £0.2 million.

Longest run this week is Lion with 8 weeks on the chart and highest total grossing movie is Sing with £28 million.

Five years ago - Despite poor reviews John Carter was the top new film of the week, it knocked The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel to number 2.

Ten years ago - Eddie Murphy starred, twice, in Norbit which entered at the top, it knockied Hot Fuzz down to number 2.

Fifteen years ago - Ocean's Eleven remained at the top for a fourth week while the top new film was We Were Soldiers at number 4.

Twenty years ago - One of Tom Cruises defining moment Jerry Maguire hit the charts at the top, it knocked Mars Attacks down to number 2

Twenty five years ago - Martin Scorsese scared us all with Cape Fear which hit the top of the box office on its debut, it knocked The Last Boy Scout down to number 2.

As happens each year the night before the Oscar nominations are announced the Razzie nominations are announced which celebrated the worst in cinematic achievements through the year.

Leading the field this year is the Transformers sequel, Revenge of the Fallen, which lets face it was truly awful and in the field for worst film along with All About Steve, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Land of the Lost and Old Dogs should win quite comfortably.

As these awards are something which are not taken too seriously, even by the foundation, in the worst actor category we have all 3 Jonas brothers up for a single nomination, in the same category we have Will Ferrell, Steve Martin, Eddie Murphy (who has had his fare share of nominations) and John Travolta.

Worst actress nods go to Beyonce, Sandra Bullock, Myley Cyrus, Megan Fox and Sarah Jessica Parker, and guess which of these was in the Transformers movie that may just pip the rest at the post.

The categories are not in the usual fashion and there is a category for Worst Screen Couple for which the Jonas brothers feature again and Worst Remake, Rip-off or Sequel, which of course the Transformers film appears in.

As we celebrated the end of a decade last year there are also categories for picture, actress and actor that were the worst of the naughties.
