This weeks new releases didn't make too much of an impact on the UK box office as Sonic the Hedgehog 2 goes back to the top as Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore doesn't perform as well as expected.

Highest new movie of the weekend is the Nicholas Cage parody movie The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent which can only manage an entry at 7 with £516,697 while FirebirdHappening is at 14 with £27,702 and finally Jersey enters at 15 with £23,830.

UK box office QuickView

  • Highest total gross - The Batman (£40 Million)

UK box office top 5 weekend breakdown 15th - 18th April 2022

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

This weekends new releases and the bad performance of Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore has given the video game adaptation a chance to go back to the top of the box office and a couple of weeks at number 2 and 3.

The movie took £1.6 Million over the weekend to go back to the top, only a 20% drop over last weekend, which gives it a total gross of £20.2 Million over 4 weeks of release.

It is performing better than Sonic the Hedgehog which at this stage in its run has taken £18 Million, and the movie is the 5th top film of 2022.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore

The third movie in the Fantastic Beasts series is not performing as well as expected and this weekend remains at number 2 with £1.6 Million, a 40% drop over last weekend.

The movie has taken £16.4 Million in the UK which is well below the previous 2 movies, it is currently the 6th top movie of 2022 in the UK.

The Lost City

Falling to number 3 after a single week at the top where it debuted last weekend the action comedy from directors Adam and Aaron Nee takes £1.3 Million this week, a 50% drop, for a total of £5.6 Million.

Operation Mincemeat

Director John Madden's war drama jumps up to number 4 this weekend from its debut of 5 last weekend with £758,698, a small 15% drop, giving the film a £2.6 Million total after 2 weeks of release.

The Bad Guys

A slim 6% drop for the animated movie gives it a climb to number 5 this weekend with £738,011 for a £9.3 Million total after 4 weeks of release.

It was a tight battle at the top this weekend but The Lost City~2022 just about does enough to make its debut at the top of the UK box office.

The Northman also makes a new entry at number 4 while Operation Mincemeat is also new at 5, also making their debuts are K.G.F: Chapter 2 at 7 with £612,327 and Beast~2022 at 8 with £319,464, finally director Paul Verhoeven's Benedetta is new at 11 with £62,056.

  • Number 1 - The Lost City~2022 (1st weekend)
  • Highest debut - The Lost City~2022 (@1)
  • Longest run - Sing 2 (12 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - The Batman (£40 Million)

UK box office top 5 weekend breakdown 15th - 18th April 2022

The Lost City

After a weekend full of new releases the Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum starring action comedy makes its UK box office debut at the top.

The movie takes £2.7 Million on its UK debut, this higher than Tatums hit movie Dog from earlier this year but half that of Bullocks last cinema film Ocean's 8 from 2018.

The movie has been a hit across the globe with the UK one of the last countries to get the movie, but with a number of high profile movies coming in the next few weeks this could be a short stay for the movie.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore

It was a tight margin between this and The Lost City~2022 at number 1 but the third Fantastic Beasts movie fell just short of a second weekend at the top.

With a gross of £2.6 Million, 55% down on its debut last weekend, and despite not doing that bad it is well short of the previous two movies Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and the series has simply not had the impact of the Harry Potter series.

The movie is the 7th top grosser of 2022 and there is every possibility it could return to top next weekend.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

THe video game star falls to number 3 this weekend with £2 Million, a 29% drop over last weekend giving the blue hedgehog a total UK gross of £16 Million after 3 weeks and the 5th top movie of 2022.

The Northman

Highly praised by critics the Nordic action movie directed by Robert Eggers and starring Alexander Skarsgard and Nicole Kidman lands at number 4 this weekend.

The movie takes £897,737 on its debut weekend.

Operation Mincemeat

Finally on the top 5 is another new entry with the Colin Firth starring movie which is at 5 with a debut gross of £895,008, a small margin separated this and The Northman!
