As more cinemas re-open in the UK, but with restrictions for capacity and mask wearing, Unhinged goes back to the top and the top 15 movies grossed nearly a million pound this weekend.

With the cinema going public waiting for the 'saviour' of cinema, Tenet, opening next weekend there were no new releases this weekend so no highest new entry.

Here is the top 5 movies in the UK 21st - 23rd August 2020.

Unhinged

The Derrick Borte directed movie starring Russell Crowe as a man who becomes psychotic after a bump in his car goes back to the top of the UK box office with a weekend gross of £178.8K.

The movie has now made £962.1K over its 4 weeks of release and should go over a million by next weekend.

It is the most successful film since cinemas started re-opening after the COVID-19 shutdown, with Tenet being released next weekend and will go to the top, that will in one week take over that crown.

Onward

Pixar's latest movie spends yet another weekend inside the top 5 movies, this week at number 2, with an 11th weekend take of £142.1K.

THe movie which was released before the pandemic closures has now taken £6.2 Million.

Inception

Christopher Nolans 2010 movie made it to the top last weekend and falls to number 3 this week with, £117.4K, this takes the films total to £35.6 Million after 13 weeks on the chart.

100% Wolf

The animated tale of Werewolves goes back to number 4 this week with £105.5K for a half million total after 4 weeks.

Pinocchio

Falling to number 5 this week after making its debut at 3 last week the Matteo Garrone directed movie takes £99.2K over the weekend for a £324.1K after 2 weeks.

What were the big movies hitting the UK box office over the last 30 year? Each week we present a rundown of the UK box office chart headlines on this same week from last year to 1990.

A year ago (2019)

The number one film was Aladdin which had been at the top for 4 weeks.

The top new film of the week was Men In Black: International directed by F. Gary Gray and starring Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth which entered the box office at number 2.

The film with the longest run was Casino Royale which had been on the box office for 15 weeks.

The top total grossing film of the week was Avengers: Endgame which had taken £87.8 Million after 8 weeks of release.

Five years ago (2015)

Also making its debut at the top was Jurassic World starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard and directed by Colin Trevorrow

The film with the longest run was Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back which had been on the box office for 24 weeks.

The top total grossing film of the week was Avengers: Age Of Ultron which had taken £48.1 Million after 8 weeks of release.

Ten years ago (2010)

The number one film was Sex And The City 2 which had been at the top for 3 weeks.

The top new film of the week was Letters To Juliet directed by Gary Winick and starring Amanda Seyfried and Gael Garca Bernal which entered the box office at number 2.

The longerst run on the box office and the top total grossing film was Iron Man 2 which had taken £20.9 Million over 7 weeks of release.

Fifteen years ago (2005)

The top new film of the week was The Package directed by Andrew Davis and starring Gene Hackman and Joanna Cassidy which entered the box office at number 2.

The film with the longest run was Look Who's Talking which had been on the box office for 11 weeks.

The Joker holds onto the top spot in quite spectacular style leaving Abominable comes in at 2 and quite disappointingly Will Smith's new film Gemini Man has to settle for a debut at 3.

Joker

Todd Phillips film about the psychotic Batman villain holds onto the box office charts this week in style only dropping 22% from last week for a $9.8 Million weekend gross.

This puts the Joaquin Phoenix starring movie at £30 Million after 2 weeks of release, the movie is already the 7th top grossing movie of the year.

Abominable

Dreamworks new animated tale is the top new film of the week and makes its debut at number 2.

The debut gross of the film is £2.1 Million, in comparison their last film, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, from earlier this year made its debut with £5.3 Million.

Gemini Man

The new Will Smith movie directed by Ang Lee disappoints this week and makes its debut at number 3.

After a lot of hype promoting the action and the special effects the debut gross should have been a lot better, but the film makes its debut with £1.7 Million.

Smiths last film to hit the chart was Disney's Aladdin so its an unfair comparison but that film debuted to £7 Million in May of this year.

Judy

Despite a lot of critical praise the Renée Zellweger starring true life drama falls to 4 this week with a weekend gross of £1.1 Million.

This takes the films total gross after 2 weeks of release to £4.7 Million.

Downton Abbey

The ITV drama on its feature film debut falls to 5 this week with £949 Thousand for a £24.4 Million after 5 weeks of release.

The Lion King

Disneys animated remake is still the top total grossing movie on the box office with a gross that is now £75.5 Million after 13 weeks of release.

Toy Story 4

It looks like the other Disney animation is simply not going to leave the box office charts as it racks up a 17th weekend, the films gross is now £65.9 Million.

The Todd Philips directe movie Joker continues its run at the top film across the world as it expands to more countries while the top 5 is relatively unchanged with the new animated movie The Addams Family coming in at number 4 as the highest new film.

Joker

Starring Joaquin Phoenix as the psychotic title character the controversial film has done far better than expected and this week expands its country count to 80 and takes $178.7 Million.

The film did incredibly well with ticket sales over the week and its total gross is now at $543.9 Million after 2 weeks of release and a $1 Billion total does not seem unlikely now.

Gemini Man

The Ang Lee directed movie expands its country count this week to 54 but can't beat Joker on the box office as it take $51 Million over the weekend from 54 territories.

This takes the film total global gross to $59.5 Million after 2 weeks of release.

The Captain

The Chinese language film falls to number 3 this week with a weekend gross of $33.4 Million from just 6 countries.

The film has taken an incredible $340.9 Million after 2 weeks of release.

The Addams Family

MGM bring us a new take on the 1960's TV show this week which enters the box office at number 4 with $30.2 Million, but this is from a single country of release.

The film goes wide over the coming weeks across the rest of the globe where we should see the film climb the box office.

My People, My Country

The series of short stories brought together to create one movie falls to number 5 this week with $23 Million from 10 countries, the film has an incredible total gross now of $357.4 Million after just 2 weeks.

Directed by Tate Taylor and starring Octavia Spencer and Allison Janney Ma is released in the UK on 31st May 2019.

This psychological horror has a star turn for Spencer who play a woman who invites students into her home to party but has sinister ulterior motive.

The film has a good horror pedigree coming from Jason Blum the producer of Get Out, Us and Happy Death Day.

The BBFC have given the film a 15 certificate for strong violence, sexual abuse, threat, sex, drug use, very strong language and it has an official run time of 99 minutes (1 hour 39 minutes).
