As we get closer to the re-opening of UK cinemas we take a look back at what was making headlines at the UK box office in the last 30 years.

We take a look at 1991 where Awakenings was the top movie, 2016 with Kung Fu Panda hitting the top and 2006 where The Hills Have Eyes was the new film at number 1.

A year ago (2020)

No.1 movie: - Onward which had been at the top for 2 weeks.

Highest debut: - The Hunt directed by Craig Zobel and starring Betty Gilpin and Hilary Swank which entered the box office at number 3.

Top total grossing and longest run: - 1917 which had taken £43.7 Million over 10 weeks of release.

Five years ago (2016)

No. 1 and highest debut: - Kung Fu Panda 3 starring Jack Black and Bryan Cranston and directed by Alessandro Carloni and Jennifer Yuh

Top total grossing and longest run: - Star Wars: The Force Awakens which had taken £122.9 Million over 13 weeks of release.

Ten years ago (2011)

No. 1 and Highest debut: - Battle: Los Angeles starring Aaron Eckhart and Ramón Rodríguez and directed by Jonathan Liebesman

Top total grossing and longest run: - The Kings Speech which had taken £43.3 Million over 10 weeks of release.

Longest run: - Babe which had been on the box office for 14 weeks.

Top total grossing: - Seven which had taken £19.3 Million after 11 weeks of release.

Thirty years ago (1991)

No. 1 and highest debut: - Awakenings starring Robert De Niro and Robin Williams and directed by Penny Marshall

Longest run: - Home Alone which had been on the box office for 15 weeks.

Top total grossing: - Dances With Wolves which had taken £10.1 Million after 6 weeks of release.

There was little doubt that the new Spider-Man movie would remain at the top of the UK box office on its second weekend of release with only Annabelle Comes Home making a new entry on the top 5.

Spider Man: Far From Home

The last film in the phase 3 of the MCU remains at the top of the UK box office for a second weekend with a gross of £4.3 Million.

This puts the films total UK gross at £22.5 Million which is well ahead of the films predecessors £16.8 Million after 2 weeks.

In fact the film is on par with Spider-Man 3 which is the top grossing Spidey film at this stage of release.

Toy Story 4

The animated sequel from Pixar is at 2 this week with a weekend take of £3.8 Million.

This puts the films total UK gross at &42.5 Million after 4 weeks of release and is the second highest grossing film of the year behind Avengers: Endgame.

The film is also the highest total grossing movie on the box office this week (outside of Casino Royale on its Secret Cinema run).

Annabelle Comes Home

The new film from The Conjuring Universe enters the UK box office at number 3 this week with £2.2 Million.

This is good for a film from the horror franchise and is the highest opening film from the Annabelle trology.

Yesterday

Danny Boyles Beatle influenced film is at 4 this week with a gross of £1 Million pushing the films total to £8.1 Million.

Aladdin

The Disney Live action movie has been a bit of a surprise hit and this week is at number 5 with £355,707.

This puts the films total UK gross at £35 Million and its the fourth biggest hit of the year so far.

The Matrix

Making a return to the UK box office for its 20th anniversary is the ground breaking movie from 1999 from the Wachowski siblings.

The film is presented in a brand new 4K restoration and takes £163,812 this weekend, the other 2 films in the series were also released in 4K restoration prints.

Rocketman

The Elton John films has the longest run on the chart this weekend with 8 weeks and has a total UK gross of £22.8 Million.
