American movie goers went to the cinema in droves this weekend to see two very different film, Ben Affleck in Gone Girl and horror film Annabelle.

Winning the race was the highly anticipated book adaptation Gone Girl. Directed by acclaimed director David Fincher who brought us films like Seven, Gone Girl takes an estimated $38 million over the weekend.

Very close behind is the horror film Annabelle about a satanic doll that terrorises a couple in their house. Developed by the team behind 2013 The Conjuring Annabelle took $37.2 million over the weekend.

Last weeks top film, The Equalizer falls to 3rd place this week with $19 million on it's second week of release.
