Also making its debut at the top was Everest starring Jason Clarke and Ang Phula Sherpa and directed by Baltasar Kormakur

The film with the longest run was Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back which had been on the box office for 38 weeks.

The top total grossing film of the week was Minions which had taken £46.3 Million after 12 weeks of release.

Twenty five years ago (1995) -

Making its debut at the top was Judge Dredd starring Sylvester Stallone and Armand Assante and directed by Danny Cannon

The film with the longest run was Tales From The Crypt: Demon Knight which had been on the box office for 8 weeks.

The top total grossing film of the week was Batman Forever which had taken £8.7 Million after 2 weeks of release.

Thirty years ago (1990) -

Making its debut at the top was Total Recall starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Rachel Ticotin and directed by Paul Verhoeven

The longerst run on the box office and the top total grossing film was Pretty Woman which had taken £12.1 Million over 9 weeks of release.

Now in its 5th variation Mission:Impossible hits the top spot on its debut weekend as the Tom Cruise franchise continues with more explosions than before.

Taking £5.3 million over the weekend Mission:Impossible Rogue Nation continues the run started way back in 1996, every Mission:Impossible film has debuted at the top.

In comparison hasn't done as well as the £8 million plus of the first and fourth film but is on a par with the others all in the £5 million range.

Falling into second place this week is Inside Out after a single week at the top, although it's not bad news for the Pixar film, it took and incredible £9 million is mid week taking and would by far have been the biggest film is it took Monday to Sunday figures into account.

Also new this week is Hot Pursuit, the American hit film limps into the UK box office at number 7.

Highest grossing film on the box office is Jurassic World which is currently at £62.7 million after 8 weeks of release.

Historical charts

A year ago - Guardians of The Galaxy was the new film entering the box office at the top, it knocked Dawn of The Planet of The Apes down to number 2.

Five years ago - Toy Story 3 remained at the top for a second week while the remake of The Karate Kind was the highest new film at number 2.

Ten years ago - Charlie and The Chocolate Factory made its way to the top on its debut weekend of release, Madagascar fell to number 2.

Fifteen years ago - The Perfect Storm was the new film at the top, on its debut weekend Stuart Little fell to number 2.

Twenty years ago - Casper was the new film making its debut at number 1, it knocked Judge Dredd down to number 3.

Twenty Five yeas ago - Gremlins 2 The New Batch made its debut at the top knocking Back to The Future Part III down to number 3.

Absolutely no surprise at all that The Dark Knight Rises is the biggest film of the week, and the £14 Million debut weekend is as expected.

The tragedy that took place in America on Thursday night at a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises does not seem to have affected the box office over here with a weekend take of £ 14,362,443 it is very close to to 2008's The Dark Knight which opened just north of £11 million. The best opener of the year is still Avengers Assemble nearly £16 Million.

With the release of the new Batman film there were no other new films this week but last weeks top film Ice Age Continental Drift still does the numbers and has a weekend of £ 2,112,021.

This time last year Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 was still at the top having taken £ 44,271,997 in 2 weeks while Pixars Cars 2 was the top new release with £3,541,664 at 2.

Five years ago Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was still at the top with a total gross of £30,062,094 after 2 weeks and the remake of John Walters Hairspray was the highest new film at 2 with £2,045,912.

Ten years ago Scooby Doo was still top with a gross of £9,420,817 and with the top 2 staying the same the highest new film was Stuart Little 2 at 3 with a take of £1,343,398.
