Spider-Man: No Way Home continues it's run at the top of the global box office this weekend as it spends a fourth weekend at the top, and with audience being unimpressed with the weekends new release, The 355 makes its debut at number 8 with $6.3 Million.

Global box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Spider-Man: No Way Home (4th weekend)
  • Highest debut - The 355 (@8)
  • Longest run - Encanto (7 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Spider-Man: No Way Home ($1.5 Billion)

Global box office top 5 breakdown weekend 7th - 9th January 2022

Spider Man: No Way Home

Four weeks in the the Marvel/Sony movie is still outstripping everything at the global box office as the movie takes $97.4 Million over the weekend from 63 countries, a slim 26% drop.

The movie has been the biggest thing to hit the global box office in a couple of year and this weekend its total global gross sits at an amazing $1.5 Billion.

It is now the 8th top movie of all time having just overtaken The Avengers from 2012.

Sing 2

THe animated sequel is proving to be a big hit at the global box office as the movie jumps to number 2 on it's third weekend with $29 Million from 55 countries, a very slim 21% drop over last weekend.

The movie has now taken $190.8 Million over its 3 week global release.

The King's Man

Director Matthew Vaughn's prequel movie jumps to number 3 from 6 on its third weekend with a gross of $16.6 Million from 44 countries, a slim 10% drop over last weekend.

This puts the movies total global gross at $74.2 Million.

Embrace Again

Released in just 5 countries the Chinese movie falls to number 4 this weekend with $10.9 Million, a drop of 87%, giving it a total of $112.5 Million after 2 weeks of release.

The Matrix Resurrections

THe latest movie in The Matrix series has had a troubled box office run so far but this week jumps to number 5 from 7 with a gross of $9.5 Million, a reasonable 45% drop over last weekend.

The movie is still on release in a huge 77 countries and has taken $76.2 Million globally to date.

After a re-release in China the 2009 James Cameron movie Avatar has once again become the top grossing movie of all time after it was knocked down to second place by Avengers: Endgame in 2019.

The 3D spectacular became the top grossing movie of all time on its initial release, replacing another James Cameron directed movie Titanic, which had been there for 10 years.

Avatar was also at the top for 10 years before being replaced by Avengers: Endgame which narrowly grossed more than the $2.78 Billion Avatar took with a $2.79 Billion global gross.

It was clear that all it was going to take was a successful re-release of the Avatar movie to reclaim the top, and in a period of time when studios are being cautious about releasing new movies why not release a film which has already made its money?

The real big winner here is Disney, they of course own the Marvel Universe movies for which Avengers: Endgame is one and since the 20th Century Fox acquisition in 2019/2020 they also own the Avatar franchise, so are Disney now going to re-release the Avengers movie?

James Cameron is currently working on 4 more Avatar movies and judging from this re-release the fan base is still there and hence the future for the franchise looks promising, maybe we'll get the first $3 Billion movie once the pandemic is out of the way?

As expected with such a massive debut weekend Avengers: Endgame remains at the top of the US box office for a second weekend with thriller The Intruder entering the chart at number 2.

Avengers: Endgame

Taking a mammoth $145.8 million on its second weekend of release the Marvel film continues to reign above all else in its path, the films US gross is now $619.7 million and the 8th top grossing film ever.

The drop from last week record breaking openieng was significant but similar to other films on its genre and the films posted the second highest second weekend gross after Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

THe film has a fight on its hands to beat the Star Wars movie but its possible, it will definitely become at least the second highest grossing film in the US ever.

The Intruder

This thriller starring Meagan Good and Dennis Quaid enters the box office at number 2 on its debut weekend taking $11 million dollars.

It had no chance agains the might of The Avengers but has dome well to be the highest new film of the week against stiff competition.

Long Shot

The political comedy starring Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen enters the box office at number 3 this week with a debut gross of $10 million.

Perhaps a little disappointing really as the film would have been a good bet to be the biggest new film of the week but audiences perhaps preferring a good thrill instead.

Uglydolls

Animated comedies always do well at the box office and this is no exception as it enters at number 4 with a weekend gross of $8.5 million.

Captain Marvel

The Avengers studio mate falls from 2 to number 5 this week in the aftermath of Endgames record breaking weekend which saw a boost in this films takings.

The films takings this week are $4.3 million boosting its total gross to $420.7 million, the film is the 23rd highest grossing film ever in the US.

The film does take the honor of longest run on the US box office this week with 9 weeks of release, and still in the top 5, not bad!

Sony/Marvel/Disney have released a new trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home - and incredibly there is a major spoiler for Avengers: Endgame at the start.

This is a very curious move from the studios as the Marvel film, which is the end of the Marvel Phase 3 period, has only been in cinemas for 2 weeks, although arguably with its $2.2 billion global gross arguably those that care have seen it.

Despite this the trailer is a good run through what will happen in the film which is set in various countries across Europe and looks like it will embed Peter Parker firmly in the Avengers/S.H.I.E.L.D. establishment making him a true Avenger.

So if you have seen Avengers: Endgame, or don't care about spoilers check out the trailer below.
