All eyes were on the much delayed return of Maverick director Steven Spielberg who's retelling of the classic West Side Story made its debut this week, but Disney's Encanto managed a very strong 3rd weekend to beat off the competition.
Meanwhile French comedy Les Tuche 4 from writer director Olivier Baroux made its debut at number 10 with $5.3 Million, an impressive feat considering its only released in France.
Global box office QuickView
Global box office top 5 breakdown weekend 10th - 12th December 2021
Three weeks at the top of the global box office for Disney's latest animated feature which take $23 Million over the weekend from 64 countries, a slim 31% drop over last weekend.
The movie easily beat the new release challenge from West Side Story and has a current total gross of $151.8 Million globally.
The new movie from Maverick director Steven Spielberg has been delayed by a year but its his first movie as director since 2018's Ready Player One.
His adaptation of the classic 1957 broadway show, and later adapted into a classic movie in 1961 directed by Robert Wise lands on the global box office at number 2 this week with $13.5 Million from 54 countries.
Although the movie got beaten by Disneys Encanto it is still to go as wide, although the top spot will be unachievable as Spide-Man: No Way Home gets its long awaited release this week and there is little change of this beating such a highly anticipated movie.
The Chinese only release from director Chi-Kin Kwok drops to number 3 this weekend with $14.6 Million, a 42% drop over last weekend.
The movie has now taken an impressive $51.6 Million over its 2 weekends of release.
Remaining at number 4 this weekend is the Ridley Scott directed movie which takes $14.1 Million from 64 countries, a good 34% drop on its third weekend of release giving it a $93 Million total.
Falling to 5 this weekend is the Ghostbusters sequel which takes $13.5 Million from 54 countries on its 4th weekend of release, a 42% drop, giving it a total of $164.7 Million.
No other film mattered this week as Jurassic World stormed the world box office and left the competition behind.
Taking a staggering $511 million from 67 countries the dinosaur film has become the second biggest opening film of all time, behind Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2 from 2011.
Time will tell how well the film will ultimately do but it's half way to the magic billion dollar mark and almost quarter of the way to beating Titanic, Avatar with $2.7 billion may be a little out of its reach.
Last week top film across the globe fell into second place this week, San Andreas takes $53 million from 69 countries and has now grossed $373.3 million.
Worthy of a mention this week is Indian film Hamari Adhuri Kahaani which is number 10 this week from just 1 country.
Here is the full world box office top 10:
On the UK video sales chart this week Disneys Into The Woods outsells the competition and debuts at the top.
Into The Woods was released in the UK on 9th January this year where is debuted at number 2, missing out on the top spot by new entry that week Tak3n.
The film spent 7 weeks on the chart and was still making a showing at some cinemas in the last few weeks.
The film to date has grossed £9.8 million during it's run.
Last weeks top film The Theory of Everything fell to number 2 this week.
Other new film on the video chart are: Foxcatcher at number 4 and A Most Violent Year at number 13.
Tangled maintained its position at the top of the UK box office chart this week with a non-too shabby weekend gross of £4,569,135 which is only down just over half a million on the previous week, not bad, this means also that the overall gross over 10 days stands at £ 10,742,265.
Retaining it number 2 spot is The Kings Speech which is still managing to impress, not only at the box office but at the continuous awards ceremonies at this time of year, a weekend take of £2,739,204 brings its gross of 5 weeks to £30,014,606.
Highest new entry of the week The Fighter, another Oscar contender for many awards the film stars Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale and is directed by David O. Russell. A weekend take of £ 2,118,140 is good considering the competition.
Black Swan drops a single place to 4 with £1,725,630 while new at 5 is the James Cameron presented Sanctum, it's not doing the same numbers as a Cameron directed film and is maybe a little disappointing with £ 859,064.
Again this weeks box office is a little higher than this time last year where Avatar was still the top film and still raking in a weekend take of over £4million. Highest new entry was Disney's The Frog Princess with Astro Boy following and Invictus not far behind. Sherlock Holmes was still hanging onto the top 5.
