This week in the UK Marvel/Disney's new franchise made its mark by debuting at the top of the box office at the top.

The tiny superhero had a debut weekend gross of £4 million from 555 sites, below other Marvel superhero films but for one of the less known characters and a new franchise a good opening.

A decent run over the school summer holidays could see a total gross in the high 20's into low 30 million region.

Falling into second place are the Minions, a £2.7 million gross has extended their total to £32 million, with plenty more to go over the summer this could be one of the highest grossers of the year.

André Rieu's 2015 Maastricht Concert also makes an appearance in the top 5 this week with a followup to the 2014 concert of the same name.

Indian film Bajrangi Bhaijaan and The Gallows also make appearances in the top 10 at 7 and 9 respectively.

Historical charts

A year ago - Dawn of The Planet of The Apes made it's debut on the UK box office at the top knocking down How to Train Your Dragon 2 into the runner up spot.

Five years ago - Christoper Nolan's Inception made it's mark on the box office debuting at the top while The Twilight Saga: Eclipse fell to number 3

Ten years ago - Madagascar made its way to the top of the UK box office knocking War of The Worlds to number 2 after 2 weeks at the top.

Fifteen years ago - Chicken Run continued its run at the top while The Patriot made its debut at number 3.

Minions got released in America this weekend and duly takes itself to the top of the world box office with a world gross of $239.5 million.

The Minions have pulled in a world gross of $395.7 million so far and it is on its way to grossing a magic billion.

Not pulling in the number like anyone expected Terminator Genisys this week falls down to number 2 with a world gross of $61 million.

The 5 Terminator film has to date pulled in $224.8 million in world grosses, not great for a well established franchise.

Jurassic world is starting to slow down this week but it now stands at $1.4 billion in world grosses.

Here is the full world top 10:

  1. Minions - $239,502,285
  2. Terminator Genisys - $61,000,000
  3. Jurassic World - $39,816,865
  4. Forever Young - $38,070,000
  5. Inside Out - $36,208,000
  6. Tiny Times 4.0 - $36,000,000
  7. Magic Mike XXL - $19,940,000
  8. Ted 2 - $17,957,760
  9. The Gallows - 11,215,000
  10. Monk Comes Down the Mountain - $10,000,000

The little yellow Minions opened in the US this week and became the second highest grossing animated debut film behind Shrek The Third.

With nothing else opening big in the US market the Minions simply stole the show with it's $115 million opening.

A fantastic opening and the appeal of the characters which started with the Despicable Me films sets in in good stead to become one of the highest grossing animations and a $1 billion+ gross.

Falling into second place is Jurassic World after its 4 week run at the top of the box office, although it cant complain, it is the highest grossing film of the year in the US having grossed $590 million so far.

Other new film in America this week are: The Gallows at number 5 and Self/Less at number 8.
