A weekly rundown of the UK box office chart big films over the last 30 years.

A year ago (2019) -

The number one film was Avengers: Endgame which had been at the top for 2 weeks and with a total gross of £69.3 Million it was also the top total grossing film.

The top new film of the week was Long Shot directed by Jonathan Levine and starring Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen which entered the box office at number 2.

The film with the longest run was How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World which had been on the box office for 10 weeks.

Five years ago (2015) -

The number one film was Avengers: Age Of Ultron which had been at the top for 2 weeks.

The top new film of the week was Far From The Madding Crowd directed by Thomas Vinterberg and starring Carey Mulligan and Matthias Schoenaerts which entered the box office at number 2.

The film with the longest run was Big Hero 6 which had been on the box office for 10 weeks.

The top total grossing film of the week was Fast & Furious 7 which had taken £36.5 Million after 5 weeks of release.

Ten years ago (2010) -

Another film making its debut at the top was Iron Man 2 starring Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow and directed by Jon Favreau

The longerst run on the box office and the top total grossing film was Alice In Wonderland which had taken £42.2 Million over 9 weeks of release.

Fifteen years ago (2005) -

Making its debut at the top was The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy starring Martin Freeman and Mos Def and directed by Garth Jennings

The longerst run on the box office and the top total grossing film was Hitch which had taken £17.1 Million over 8 weeks of release.

Twenty years ago (2000) -

Making its debut at the top was Scream 3 starring David Arquette and Neve Campbell and directed by Wes Craven

The film with the longest run was American Beauty which had been on the box office for 14 weeks.

The top total grossing film of the week was Toy Story 2 which had taken £43.5 Million after 12 weeks of release.

Twenty five years ago (1995) -

Making its debut at the top was Outbreak starring Dustin Hoffman and Rene Russo and directed by Wolfgang Petersen

The film with the longest run was Rudyard Kiplings The Jungle Book which had been on the box office for 11 weeks.

The top total grossing film of the week was Dumb And Dumber which had taken £7.5 Million after 4 weeks of release.

Thirty years ago (1990) -

Making its debut at the top was Nuns On The Run starring Eric Idle and Robbie Coltrane and directed by Jonathan Lynn

The film with the longest run was Honey I Shrunk The Kids which had been on the box office for 13 weeks.

The top total grossing film of the week was Look Who's Talking which had taken £9.8 Million after 5 weeks of release.

Now in its third week Avengers Age of Ultron is totally dominent on the UK box office, this weekend taking another £3 million.

The total gross for the laters Marvel superhero film in the UK is £40 million which takes it above Fast and Furious 7 as the highest grossing film of the year, an accolade Furious 7 held for 1 week.

Age of Ultron is more or less running at a par with Avengers Assemble and should end up with a similar total UK gross, across the work Ultron has grossed just over $880 million.

Making its debut on the box office this week is British film [spooks] The Greater Good - based on the TV show Spooks.

Entering in the runner up spot the film takes just over a million pound.

Other new film to enter the box office this week are: The Age of Adaline at 5 and Big Game at number 7.

Historical charts - A year ago - Bad Neighbours took over from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 at the top of the chart on it's debut week of release.

Five years ago - Iron Man 2 held on strong at the top of the box office which the highest new film of the week was Furry Vengeance which came in at 2.

Ten years ago - Kingdom of Heaven made it's debut at the top of the box office knocking The Hitchhikers Guide to The Galaxy down to the number 2 slot.

Fifteen years ago - Kevin and Perry Go Large was still riding high at the top of the UK box office while the highest new film was right down at 6 in the shape of Man On The Moon starring Jim Carrey.

Twenty years ago - Outbreak held onto the top of the box office and there were no new entries on the chart for this week.
