UK weekend box office top 5 breakdown 29th - 31st July 2022

Highest new movie of the weekend

Making its debut at the top of the UK box office this weekend is a movie inspired by the characters in the DC Universe of Super-heroes and their Super-Pets!

The movie stars the voise talents of Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Heart and it takes £2.6 Million on its debut weekend.

Falling to number 2 this weekend after taking the top spot for a second time is the Minions sequel movie which on its 5th weekend of release takes £1.9 Million, a 35% drop.

The movie has now taken a total of £33.5 Million in the UK which is just behind the original movie which had taken £37 Million in 2015.

The movie is also the 6th biggest film of 2022 to date.

The latest in the MCU movies falls to number 3 this weekend with £1,9 Million, a 37% drop over last weekend.

The fourth in the Thor series has now taken £30 Million at the UK box office after 4 weeks of release, it is currently ahead of 2017's Thor: Ragnarok which had taken £28 Million at this stage in its run.

The movie is currently the 7th top movie of 2022.

The Elvis Presley bio-pic from director Baz Luhrmann remains at number 4 this weekend with £1.1 Million on its 6th weekend, a very slim 11% drop over last week.

This gives the movie a total UK gross of £20.8 Million making it the directors top grossing movie in the UK.

The incredible run of the Top Gun sequel has been unprecedented for a movie that was release over 30 years after the original, and it has found a new generation of fans and the studio must be looking at doing another movie, perhaps without Tom Cruise!

The movie has this weekend taken £981,129, a very slim 10% drop over last weekend which takes the movies total in the UK to £76 Million.

It is the top grossing movie of 2022, where it might remain if Avatar: Way of the Water doesn't spoil the party in December.

The movie is also now the 9th top grossing movie ever in the UK having taken over the 2019 version of The LIon King~2019 with an eye to go even higher on the list.

Comparing it to the original movie from 1986 is hard considering the gap in releases, but if adjust for inflation the £1.88 average price of a ticket in 1986 then the original would have taken about £49 Million at this stage in its run.

UK box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Top Gun Maverick (1st weekend)
  • Highest debut - Top Gun Maverick (@1)
  • Longest run - The Phantom of the Open (10 weeks)

UK weekend box office top 5 breakdown 27th - 29th May 2022

Top Gun Maverick

Top Gun released in 1986 was the breakout movie for Tom Cruise and catapulted the young actor into mega stardom, there have been many attempts to bring a sequel to the big screen and 36 years later we finally get the movie.

After amazing reviews the movie flies into the box office at number 1 on its debut weekend with a gross of £15 Million making it the highest grossing debut for the actor, and the 27th highest debut of all time.

Its unfair to compare the gross of the sequel with the original but Top Gun opened to around £4.2 Million in 1986 which adjusted for inflation is about £16 Million, it went on to gross around £8.5 Million in the UK which adjusted for inflation is about £31 Million.

The movie is already the 8th top film in 2022, it should end up in the top 5 if not the top 3 by year end.

Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness

After spending 3 weeks at the top the sequel movie to Doctor Strange falls to number 2 this weekend with a gross os £1.3 Million, a fairly big 54% drop over last weekend.

This gives the film a total UK gross of £37.7 Million after 4 weeks of release, it is currently the top grossing movie on the top 15.

For 2022 it is currently the second top grossing movie but it should take The Batman by next weekend to become the top movie of the year so far, unless Top Gun Maverick spoils the party, and with a very long holiday weekend coming who can tell!

Everything Everywhere All At Once

The independent movie about the multiverse has done amazingly well considering it went up against Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness but the movie peaked at number 2 last weekend and drops to number 3 this week with £486,829, a 42% drop.

After 3 weeks on the box office the movie has taken £3 Million in the UK.

Downton Abbey: A New Era

Dropping to number 4 this weekend is the British aristocracy movie which takes £350,593, a 54% drop, over its 5th weekend giving the movie a total UK gross of £13 Million.

The sequel has not done as well as its predecessor as that movie had taken £25 Million at this point in its run having spent 3 weeks at the top.

The movie is the 10th top movie of 2022.

The Bobs Burgers Movie

The Belcher family make their big screen debut as they transfer to the big screen which takes £346,591 on its debut.

The TV series Bob's Burgers is not as big in the UK as it is in America where the movie made its debut at number 3, and compared to The Simpsons Movie which made its debut on 2007, that movie took an amazing £13.6 Million and debuted at the top, The Simpsons are an institution thought!

It was the Chinese new year this last weekend and the global box office saw a wave of the hits with the sequel to 2021's The Battle At Lake Changjin, The Battle At Lake Changjin II topping the list.

Also worthy of a comment is that the whole top 5 this week are new entries which meant that Spider-Man: No Way Home gets pushed down to number 6 on its 8th weekend of release.

Global box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - The Battle At Lake Changjin II (1st weekend)
  • Highest debut - The Battle At Lake Changjin II (@1)
  • Longest run - Spider-Man: No Way Home (8 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Spider-Man: No Way Home ($1.7 Billion)

Global box office top 5 weekend breakdown 4th - 6th February 2022

The Battle At Lake Changjin II

The Chinese only release of The Battle At Lake Changjin was the top grossing movie of 2021 when it was released in early October, that was until Spider-Man: No Way Home came in and spoiled the party.

The sequel gets its release this weekend in just 2 countries and knocks the Spider-man movie from the top with a debut weekend of $153.4 Million, although this is lower than the $232 Million debut of the previous movie.

The future looks good for the film and with the longevity the previous movie had this could be around for a number of weeks to come.

To top of a very good weekend for the movie it had instantly become the second best global movie of 2022.

Too Cool to Kill

Directed by Xing Wenxiong action comedy makes it debut at number 2 this week with a gross of $111.5 Million from a single country release.

On its debut weekend the movie has become the fourth top movie of 2022.

The movie has just snuck into the top 10 movies of 2022 at number 10.

Jackass Forever

To finish off the top 5 is the new sequel to the long running Jackass series which stars Johnny Knoxville and Steve-O.

What is reported to be the last movie, maybe because of the age of the principle cast, the movie makes its debut with $28.7 Million from just 10 countries.
