With the spike in COVID-19 cases in the US climbing higher than ever most states have decided to delay the opening of movie theatres so there is still no official chart and drive-ins are still a majority of the takings.

With that said the top film, for the second weekend running, is a classic re-release, this time it is the Star Wars sequel which is celebrating 40 years this year.

Here is a rundown of the top 5 film in the US 10th - 12th July 2020.

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

First released back in 1980 the highly praised sequel, which to this day and 11 movies is still considered the best movie in the Star Wars world, hits the top of the box office again.

The movie takes $611K from its 611 theatre count, the movie has made ove $200 Million since release.

Black Panther

Getting another shot at a cinema release after its successful 2018 cinema run the Marvel movie takes $367K which boosts its US gross to just over $700 Million.

Inside Out

Pixars 2015 movie about the inner workings of the mind is at 3 this week with $340K and a $356 Million total.

Jurassic Park

Another re-released movie hitting the movie theatre is the 1993 mega smash from Steven Spielberg which amazingly still holds up nearly 30 years later.

The movie takes $224K which pushes its total gross to $405.1 Million.

The Goonies

Rounding out the top 5 is another classic movie this time from 1985 which takes $215K over the weekend to push its total US gross to $66.2 Million.

The sequel no one wanted in the shape of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Out of The Shadows karate chops its way to the top of the UK video chart on its debut week.

The second in the rebooted Turtles films made its UK cinema debut on the 3rd June 2016 in the runner up position, beaten to the top by Warcraft.

The film made £3.5 million on its cinematic debut, it then dropped down the chart over the following 5 weeks.

Over its cinema run in the UK it grossed a shade under £6 million, comparing it to the 2014 original its about half of the takings.

Last weeks top film, The Angry Birds Movie, falls down to number 4 this week, its second week of release.

Also new on the home video charts is Gods of Egypt, minor hit that spent 2 weeks on the box offie in June, at number 2.

Across the globe this week Miss Peregrines School for Peculiar Children took over the top of the global box office charts on its debut week of release.

Taking a fairly average $65 million over the week from a wide 60 country release it is still good enough to double the takings of the number 2 film of the week.

Falling quite hard down to number 4 this week is last weeks top film The Magnificent Seven, the western takes $30 million for the weekend from 69 countries which brings its total gross to $108 million.

Also worth a mention this week is the film at number 2, climbing up this week after a wider release in 2 other countries I Belong To You takes $33.9 million for a total of $44.9 million.

Highest total grossing film on the global top 10 is Bridget Jones's Baby, despite a slow burn in most countries apart from the UK the film has taken $120 million and is still out in 51 countries.

At the UK box office this week Godzilla stomped on all in its path to become the nation's top film on its debut week of release.

It was a hot weekend in the UK with many annual events happening which more than likely had an effect on the takings of Godzilla, but the monster flick, directed by Britain's own Gareth Edwards still managed a stomping £6.4 million.

If you compare this to the 1998 film of the same name that's £2.3 million higher but taking inflation into account this is almost an identical debut gross, although the 1998 film did open mid July.

Last weeks top film, Bad Neighbours, falls a single place this week to number 2 having grossed £11.3 million over 10 days, although much of this was in preview showings a week before the official release.

One other new film charted this week - The Two Faces of January

This time last year Fast and Furious 6 opened at the top of the box office, keeping The Great Gatsby to open at 2, the previous top film, Star Trek Into Darkness, fell to 3.

Five years ago Angels and Demons made its debut at the top knocking Star Trek into the runner up spot.

Ten years ago Van Helsing held the top for a 3rd week while the top new film was The Football Factory at 4.

Fifteen years ago Forces of Nature climbed to the top knocking I Still Know What You Did Last Summer to the number 2 spot.
