In a fascinating weekend for the UK box office a 10 week old movie, Minions: The Rise of Gru goes back to the top, a 15 week old movie, Top Gun: Maverick goes back into the top 5 and a 2021 movie and one of the top grossing movies in the UK is the top new release, Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Adding to this the second highest new movie is E.T. The Extra Terrestrial celebrating its 40th anniversary, yes 40 years since the release of the once global highest grossing movie of all time!

Less impressive this weekend is the debut releases for Three Thousand Years of Longing which is new at 10 with £307,176, Fall~2022 new at 13 with £220,270 and The Forgiven~2021 new at 15 with £182,772.

UK weekend box office top 5 breakdown 2nd - 4th September 2022

Going back to the top of the UK box office, once again, is the sequel movie to Minions which 5 weeks after it was last at the top, and 10 weeks after it was first at the top it takes £1.06 Million to return to the top, a 46% jump over last weekend.

With no high profile new releases now in the last couple of weeks, and the end of the school summer holidays, and the bargain price of £3 per ticket on Saturday this is perhaps not too much of a surprise.

The movie has now taken £44 Million in the UK and is the second top movie of 2022, it is also the 61st top movie of all time.

Interestingly the movie is behind the first Minions movie but it has been consistently about £1 Million behind.

Also doing well at the end of the school summer holidays and jumping back up to number 2 this weekend is the animated movie based on DC superhero pets which takes £1 Million on its 6th weekend, which is 41% up from last weekend.

The movie has taken a total of £14 Million in the UK over its 6 weeks of release.

The movie which simply wont go away is the top movie of 2022 in the UK which this weekend takes £600,258, a modest 7% increase over last weekend.

The movie has now taken a total of £81.6 Million over its 15 weeks of release and is the 9th top movie of all time in the UK.

The only film this weekend on the top 5 this drops week on week is the Brad Pitt fast train heist movie which takes £554,100 on its 5th weekend of release, a 7% drop over last weekend.

This gives the movie a total UK gross of £9.2 Million.

Highest new movie of the weekend

Getting a re-release to celebrate National Cinema Day is the 2021 Spider-Man release from Marvel and Sony with a little help Disney.

The movie takes a quite incredible £469,309 on its return to the box office, incredible because the movie is the 4th biggest movie of all time in the UK and it was only in cinemas earlier this year, and although there is 20 minites extra footage it does not change the story and makes it a 3 hour movie!

Still the movie has now spent 16 weeks on the chart and taken an amazing £96.9 Million, it is also the 8th top movie of 2022.

It was a very slow weekend with no major new releases at the UK box office, and for the first time since the end of 2020 as cinemas started to close due to the COVID pandemic where no film in over the weekend took over a Million pound.

The top movie of the weekend, and the highest debut, is the event cinema Andre Rieues 2022 Maastricht Concert: Happy Days Are Here Again from the famous violinist which easily beast the new Idris Elba movie Beast~20221 which makes its debut at 2.

Further down the box office there is a new entry for The Invitation which has been on limited release and makes its debut at 12 with £261,791 and Official Competition which also on limited release is new at 15 with £101,916.

UK weekend box office top 5 breakdown 26th - 28th August 2022

Highest new movie of the weekend

Violinist Andre Rieu brings his summer concert from Maastricht to cinemas once again which gives the popular musician the highest debut and number one movie of the weekend.

In what is a very quiet period for cinemas and new releases the event cinema concert takes £798,706 on its debut.

This is of course not the first time Rieu has hit the box office but it is the first time one of his cinema events has hit the top of the box office.

The last time a concert hit the top was during the pandemic in the shape of Michael Ball & Alfie Boe: Back Together which took £175,778 in October 2020.

This has done better that last years summer concert which took, Andre Rieus 2021 Summer Concert: Together Again, which took £420,056 exactly a year ago.

The new movie starring Idris Elba makes its debut at number 2 this weekend with a debut gross of £600,259.

This is perhaps a little on the disappointing side for a film starring such a big name, the last film Elba was in was Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and he has a cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness both of which are among the biggest movies of the year.

Elba stars in another movie released this weekend, Three Thousand Years of Longing, which has not gone down that well in the US so it will be interesting to see next week how well it does in the UK.

The animated feature from the DC Universe of movies stays at number 3 this weekend with a gross of £598,985, a 26% drop.

The movie has now taken £12.2 Million in the UK after 5 weekends of release.

The Brad Pitt starring movie falls to number 4 this weekend with £593,044, a 29% drop which gives the movie a total gros sof £8.1 Million after 4 weeks of release.

Falling from the top to this weeks number 5 the Jordan Peele horror movie takes £576,643, a 50% over its gross last weekend.

The movie has now taken £5.9 Million in the UK after 3 weeks of release.

In a very quiet week for the box office with no major new releases, director Jessica M. Thompson hits the top of the North American charts with The Invitation on its debut weekend.

Veteran director George Miller disappoints with his latest movie Three Thousand Years of Longing starring Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba which comes in at number 7 with $2.8 Million and John Boyega stars in the new entry at 15, Breaking which takes just over $1 Million.

A re-release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story also makes an re-entry at 13 with $1.1 Million.

US box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - The Invitation (1st Weekend)
  • Highest debut - The Invitation (@1)
  • Longest run - Top Gun: Maverick (14 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Top Gun: Maverick ($691 Million)

US weekend box office top 5 breakdown 26th - 28th August 2022

Highest new movie of the weekend

With no major new releases out again this weekend halloween seems to have started early as this new horror movie from director Jessica M. Thompson hits the top spot on its debut.

The movie takes $7 Million on its debut weekend, and with little in the way of new movies in the coming weeks, and the halloween season fast approaching this could be a mainstay into October.

Taking advantage of the lack of but new movies the Brad Pitt starring vehicle jumps back up to number 2 this weekend with $5.6 Million, a 30% drop from last weekend.

This gives the train movie a total US gross of $78.2 Million over its 4 weeks of release.

The movie which stars Idris Elba punching a killer lion falls to 3 this weekend with $4.9 Million, a large 58% drop on its second weekend of release.

The movie has now taken $20 Million at the North American box office, this should have been a bigger hit for the star who is a box office pull these days but the marketing for the movie has been poor and it looks like it will sink onto home video quickly.

Another film taking advantage of the lack of big new movie release, the biggest movie of the summer stays inside the top 5 for a 14th weekend with a gross of $4.7 Million at number 4, a small 20% drop from last weekend.

Whats even more impressive is that the movie is released onto digital home video this week, which does not seem to have effect the box office pull of the movie.

It is by far the top movie of the year with $691 Million, a place it will remain at as the year closes, it is also now the 6th top movie of all time in the US and will close in on Black Panther in the coming days to enter the top 5 of all time.

Taking a massive dive from its debut position as the top last weekend is the Japanese animated movie which falls to number 5 this weekend with $4.5 Million, a 77% drop over last weekend which gives it a total US gross of $30.7 Million after 2 weeks.
