Two potential blockbusters battled it out for the top spot this weekend, and with the school Easter holidays starting it was the video game adaptation Sonic the Hedgehog 2 which comfortably beat the Spiderverse Morbius.

New animated feature The Bad Guys also made its debut inside the top 3 making an all new top of the chart while at the other end of the top 15 True Things from director Harry Wootliff is new at 14 with £46,186.

UK box office QuickView

  • Highest debut - Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (@1)
  • Longest run - Belfast (11 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - The Batman (£37.8 Million)

UK box office top 5 weekend breakdown 1st - 3rd April 2022

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

The speedy blue hedgehog returns in a sequel to his surprise smash hit movie Sonic the Hedgehog from 2020.

This time he is accompanied by his buddy Tails and Dr. Ivo Robotnik has brought along Knuckles to try and defeat Sonic.

The movie makes its debut with a fantastic £4.9 Million which is a tiny bit higher than the original movie but definitely in the same ball park.

The timing of the movie could not have been better and it beats the much anticipated Morbius, altohugh Sonic 2 has had far better reviews.

Morbius

The latest movie from the Sony Pictures Spiderverse of villains which also includes Venom lands at number 2 with a debut weekend gross of £3.2 Million.

This is lower than Venom and its sequel from last year Venom: Let There Be Carnage, but considering the negative critical review and word of mouth this is perhaps understandable.

Putting the movie against Sonic was probably not the best idea, it is the start of the UK Easter holidays and the younger audience has a better appetite for a video game adaptation rather than a movie based on a villain they have probably not heard of.

The Bad Guys

Completing a trio of new films at the top of the UK box office is the new movie from DreamWorks, the same studio that brought us the Shrek series of movies.

Positive reviews and the Easter holidays have taken the movie into the top 3 with a debut gross of £2.2 Million.

The Batman

After 4 weeks at the top the lastest incarnation of the Caped Crusader falls hard to number 4 this weekend with a 5th weekend gross of £1,2 Million, a small 25% drop over last weekend.

This gives the movie a total UK gross of £37.8 Million over its 5 weeks of release and it is currently the top movie of 2022, and it is the 83 top movie ever in the UK!

Ambulance

The Micheal Bay directed Ambulance drama falls to number 5 this weekend with a second weekend total of £273,015, a 48% drop over last weekend, giving the movie a total of £1.1 Million.
