News from around the web

Liam Neeson remains at the top of the US box office this weekend with the revenge thriller Honest Thief, in fact the top 3 movies remain the same as last week!

The highest new movie of the weekend is horror movie The Empty Man which makes its debut at number 4, also making a debut this week is Monsters Inc. re-release which enters at 7 and After We Collided which makes its debut at 8.

Here is the US box office Quickview.

  • Number 1 - Honest Thief (2nd week)
  • Highest debut - The Empty Man (@4)
  • Longest run - Unhinged (11 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Tenet ($52,500,000) (not including re-releases)

US top 5 box office breakdown 23rd - 25th October 2020.

Honest Thief

Liam Neeson stars in the revenge thriller which remains at the top of the US box office for a second weekend, the week taking $2.3 Million which is only a 36% drop from last weekend.

This pushes the total gross in the US to $7.4 Million on its second weekend, and with more and more cinemas starting to open it could be one of the bigger film to open during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The War With Grandpa

The Tim Hill directed comedy starring Robert De Niro remains at number 2 this week with $1.8 Million, only 25% down from last weekend.

The film has been out for 3 weeks now and has taken $9.7 Million since release.

The Empty Man

**UPDATE** With the release of the final weekend figures The Empty Man has taken just a little more than Tenet and so ended in third place rather than fourth.

Highest new movie of the week is the David Prior directed horror movie which lands at number 3 this weekend with $1.26 Million.

with Halloween next weekend the movie should have a strong second weekend but then the potential to drop off the chart is strong, although horror movies did shine during the pandemic cinema shutdown when only drive-in theatres were open.

Tenet

Warner Bros. have admitted that their 'savour of cinema' movie was actually a failure and just maybe they opened the movie too soon, regardless of that the movie takes $1.3 Million this weekend, a drop of only 19%.

The movie has been on the box office for 8 weeks now and is by far the highest grossing movie since cinemas closed in March with $52.5 Million, as a side note Warner Bros. have been cagy about the movies box office figures.

The Nightmare Before Christmas

Disney's re-release of their Henry Selick directed classic falls to number 5 this weekend with $577,000, a 57% drop, giving the movie a total gross of $76.9 Million since its 1994 release.

Liam Neeson takes over from Robert De Niro this weekend in Honest Thief which makes a very strong (in the current climate) debut at the top and pushing The War With Grandpa down to number 2.

With last weeks top film falling to number 2 there are a couple of catalogue movies in the lower end of the top 5, expected due to the lack of blockbuster movies getting released.

Further down the chart there are a few new movies, 2 Hearts is new at number 6, Love And Monsters makes its debut at number 9 and The Kid Detective one below at number 10.

Here is this weeks US box office Quickview.

  • Number 1 - Honest Thief (1st Week)
  • Highest debut - Honest Thief (@1)
  • Longest run - Unhinged (10 weeks)
  • Highest total gross (excluding re-releases) - Tenet ($50,600,000)

Here is the breakdown of this weeks US top 5 movies 16th - 18th October 2020.

Honest Thief

Liam Neeson returns to the revenge action genre with this movie directed by Mark Williams which makes its North American debut at the top with $4.2 Million (including previews), $3.7 Million Friday - Sunday.

This is not a bad debut in the current COVID-19 climate and is among the top debuts since cinemas started to reopened.

The War With Grandpa

Falling to number 2 after a single week at the top is the Tim Hill directed comedy starring Robert De Niro which this weekend taked $2.5 Million, falling 31% from last weekend.

This gives the movie a total US gross of $7.2 Millon after 10 days of release.

Tenet

Seven weeks on and Christopher Nolan's movie falls to number 3 with $1.6 Million which is a 24% drop from last weekend.

The movie has now taken $50 Million in the US the highest total grossing on the box office this week.

The Nightmare Before Christmas

First released in 1994 the Henry Selick directed movie, presented by Tim Burton of course, gets a re-release and takes a very impressive $1.3 million on its first weekend as it enters at number 4.

The movie has taken $76.4 Million since it was first released 26 years ago.

Hocus Pocus

Another Halloween favourite on its 3rd weekend of a re-release takes $756K, a 35% drop from last weekend.

The movie has now taken $3.8 Million on its re-run and $43.3 Million since first released in 1993.

With cinemas in the US having a hard time with a mixture of closures and re-openings in different states not to mention the lack of big new releases its good to see a new number 1 movie and one starring a big name.

Robert De Niro stars in the kids movie The War With Grandpa which quite easily tops the US box office this weekend pushing Tenet down to the runner up spot.

With no big blockbuster movies hitting cinemas until Christmas there is a chance we could see a lot of yo-yo'ing on the box office iver the coming weeks, and a ot of smaller independent movies doing better than expected.

Here is this weeks US box office Quickview.

  • Number 1 - War With Grandpa (1st Week)
  • Highest debut - War With Grandpa (@1)
  • Longest run - Unhinged (9 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back ($292,674,960)

Here is the US box office top 5 breakdown 9th - 11th October 2020

The War With Grandpa

Director Tim Hill's new movie gets released during a period when there is very little in the way of competition and coupled with its high profile star Robert De Niro the movie takes over at the top with a weekend gross of $3.6 Million.

The movie is squarely aimed at children and time will tell if it has enough for a long run at the top and with Tenet a continuous threat to reclaim the top and a new Liam Neeson action movie out this weekend it could be a short spell.

Tenet

Christopher Nolans mind bending movie falls from the top after 5 weeks with a weekend gross of $2.1 Million this weekend, 22% down from last weekend.

This gives the movie a 6 week total gross of $48.3 Million and is by a wide margin the top movie of recent months despite the fact it is being seen as a flop, but during the current time of closures what is a decent gross.

Hocus Pocus

The 27 year old Halloween favourite drop to number 3 this weekend with $1.1 Million, the movie has now taken $42.6 Million since its release in 1993.

This weekends gross is 40% down from last weeeknd.

The New Mutants

The mutant movie from Disney starring Maisie Williams falls to number 3 this weekend with $685K, 34% down from last weekend, taking its gross to $21.9 Million after 7 weeks of release.

Unhinged

Falling to number 5 this weekend is the Russell Crowe starring movie which takes $660K this weekend, 22% down from last weekend, for a very nice $19.3 Million over 9 weeks of release.

With Tenet still at the top of the US box office and no big new releases this weekend it was up to a 27 year old Halloween favourite to cheer up the box office.

Hocus Pocus is the top new movie of the weekend and it wasn't that far from going to the top but Tenet still had the strength to remain at the top.

With the new Bond movie, No Time To Die being delayed until April 2021 there is not a lot in the way of big new movies coming out now in 2020, there is Death On the Nile in mid December and Wonder Woman 1984 on Christmas Day so what we see now could be the shape of the box office for a while.

Here is a quick breakdown of this weeks UK box office.

  • Number 1 - Tenet (5th Weekend)
  • Highest debut - Hocus Pocus (@2)
  • Longest run - Ava (10 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Tenet ($45,100,000)

Here is a breakdown of the top 5 movies in the US 2nd - 4th October 2020.

Tenet

Five weeks in and Christopher Nolans movie is still the top film at the box office and this week it takes $2.7 Million, 21% down from last weekend.

The movie has now taken $45.1 Million in total at the US box office and is by far the top grossing movie since cinemas re-opened.

Hocus Pocus

First released in 1993, and not doing that well at the box office, the movie has since become a seasonal favourite and this week re-enters the chart at number 2 with $1.9 Million.

This means that the Bette Midler and Sarah Jessica Parker movie from the Disney company has taken $41.4 Million since its first release.

The New Mutants

The second biggest hit of the post COVID-19 closedown box office is Disney's mutant movie which this week falls to 3 with a $1 Million gross giving it a 6 week total of $20.9 Million, only the second movie to go over $20 Million since the re-opening.

Unhinged

The Russell Crowe movie which was release while cinemas were closed down across most of the US and did well in drive-in theatres this weekend falls to 4 with $870K for a total of $18.4 Million after 8 weeks of release.

Infidel

Falling to 5 this week is Cyrus Nowrasteh's political drama which takes $445K for a $3.4 Million total after 3 weeks of release.

As cinema doors remain closed and those which do open are have very limit capacity the need for a big hit is groweing ever more evident as Tenet remains at the top of the US box office for a 4th weekend.

There was a major shift in release dates last week with many Marvel film moving to 2021 and it looks like the next big hit will be the Bond movie No Time To Die in mid November, unless that moves as well!

With little to excite consumers here is the mini breakdown of the US box office.

  • Number 1 - Tenet
  • Highest debut - Break The Silence: The Movie (@3)
  • Longest run - Unhinged (7 Weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Tenet ($41,200,000)

Here is the top 5 breakdown weekend 25th - 27th September 2020.

Tenet

Christopher Nolan's movie that should have saved cinema after the COVID-19 shutdown spends a 4th weekend at the top with its latest gross of $3.4 Million, 28% down from last weekend.

The movie has now taken a quite reasonable $41.2 Million and should go over $50 quite easily, and if it can keep going into December maybe even $60 Million.

The New Mutants

Still doing well in the current climate is ill fated Disney mutant movie which remains at number 2 this weekend with $1.1 Million, down 37% from last weekend.

A five week run has given the movie $19.4 Million in total grosses in the US.

Break the Silence: The Movie

South Korean pop sensation BTS bring their concert movie to the big screen this week and is the top new movie at 3 with $1 Million.

Unhinged

The movie is has the longest run on the box office this week and takes $1 Million on its 7th weekend of release.

The low budget movie has now taken $17 Million in the US and could potentially take $20 Million before it run ends.

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

Celebrating its 40th anniversary the original Star Wars sequel gets a re-release on the big screen and lands at 5 with $908K, it has grossed $292.1 Million in the US since its 1980 release.
