Two big franchises chose this weekend to release their latest episodes and despite Jigsaw which is part of the Saw series doing well Thor: Ragnarok was the clear winner.

The Disney Marvel Cinematic Universe has become a mammoth series of films that simply cant be matched at the moment and the all star Avengers cars in Thor 3 (try saying that fast) debuts with an incredible £12.3 million making it the 47th top opening in the UK ever.

The film which stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor and is directed by exciting newcomer Taika Waititi joins the ever increasing lineup of Marvel movies and the ever increasing gross for Disney.

The future for the film looks good and, this is nearly double the opening of Thor: The Dark World which went on to gross £20 million so we could have a £35 - 40 million total UK gross.

New in the runner up position is the latest Saw film, this time by the name go Jigsaw, its actually the 8th Saw movie, and opens with £1.8 million.

This is a bit of a low for the series as the average opening for a Saw movie is about £2 - 3 million, but with Halloween this week it will see a boost, but then a big slump after, it could get to £5 million in total.

After a jump back to the top Blade Runner 2049 falls to number 5 with week with £0.6 million over the weekend, after 4 weeks of release this brings the films total to £17.4 million.

Also new this weekend was Breathe, a directorial debut from Andy Serkis starring former Spider-Man Andrew Garfield, it enters at number 8.

With Despicable Me 3 making a reappearance on the UK box office it is once again the longest running film with 17 weeks and the highest total grossing movie with £47.5 million .

Historical charts

A year ago - This time last year Doctor Strange starring Benedict Cumberbatch was the top new film of the week making its debut at number 1 while Trolls fell to number 2 after a week on top.

Five years ago - The latest James Bond film Skyfall made an incredible debut at the top of the Uk box office, it knocked Madagascar 3: Europes Most Wanted from the top after a week.

Ten years ago - Ratatouille spent its third week on top while the top new film was Saw IV at number 2.

Fifteen years ago - XXX starring Vin Diesel spent a second weekend at the top while the top new film was Halloween Resurrection right down at number 5.

Twenty years ago - With The Full Monty staring on top of the box office for another weekend the top new film was The Pacemaker with George Clooney and Nicole Kidman at number 2.

Twenty five years ago - Beauty And The Beast stayed at the top for a third weekend while the top new film was 1492 Conquest Of Paradise starring Gerard Depardieu at number 2.

Blade Runner 2049 might not have set the box office on fire when it was released 3 weeks ago but it has managed something not many film do and go back to the top of the chart after being knocked off.

It was a relatively quiet weekend at UK cinemas and the Blade runner sequel took £1.8 million to go back on top, nearly 50% down on last weekend.

This means the film has now managed £12.7 million on its UK run, its hard to put this in context of the original movie which 3 weeks in had made £0.8 million.

If take inflated ticket prices into play then the original would have made £4.3 million at this stage so the sequel is over £10 million ahead.

Highest new film of the week, and despite the appalling reviews, is Geostorm starring Gerard Butler, which enters at number 2 with £1.6 million.

The weather disaster movie is a typical summer blockbuster movie so being released so late in the year probably meant the studio had little faith in the film.

Last weeks top film, The Lego Ninjago Movie, falls to number 3 this week with £1.3 million and a total gross so far of £5.5 million.

We have a change of longest running and top total grossing film this week with IT being around for 7 weeks and grossed a total of £32 million.

Historical charts

A year ago - Animated film Trolls took over at the top from The Girl On The Train which fell to number 3 after 2 weeks on top.

Five years ago - Madagascar 3: Europes Most Wanted was the top new film of the week entering the box office at number 1 while Taken 2 fell to number 3 after 2 weeks on top.

Ten years ago - Ratatouille spent a second weekend at the top while the top new film of the week was Stardust starring Claire Danes and Michelle Pfeiffer.

Fifteen years ago - Vin Diesel starred in XXX which was the top new film of the week at number 1 while Lilo and Stitch fell to number 2 after 2 weeks at the top.

Twenty years ago - Hercules spent its second weekend at the top while top new film was Shooting Fist at number 2.

Twenty five years ago - The animated Beauty and The Beast spent its second weekend on top while top new film Strictly Ballroom entered at number 2.
