Finding Dory has had a fantastic run at the box office, 2 spells at the top but this week falls down to number 3.

Its not a sad story thought and an excellent 6th week gross of £1.5 million brongs the films total gross in the UK to a fantastic £38 million, it has not out grossed Finding Nemo in the UK.

Also making their debut on the box office chart this week are Brotherhood at number 2 with £1.9 million and Cafe Society at number 9 with £0.5 million.

Highest grossing film on the box office this week is Finding Dory and longest run is The BFG which has spent 7 weeks on the top 10.

The fishy tale of the forgetful fish is having a fantastic UK box office run with a £1.5 million 5th weekend bringing its total gross to £35.8 million.

With another week to go of the School summer holidays Dory could well make another weekend at the top of the box office.

Historical Charts

A year ago - Suprise hit Straight Outta Compton made its debut a the top knocking off Paper Town which fell right down to number 8.

Five years ago - Staying at number one was The Inbetweeners Movie on its second week while the highest new film was One Day in at number 2.

Many people doubted it could be done, but it was only a matter of time, and now it's gone and done it, Avatar is now the second highest grossing film ever globally, and it took less than 3 weeks to do it.

This now means that director James Cameron, who remember has previously brought us The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, has the top 2 highest grossing films of all time globally, not bad going for a director who took 12 year to follow up the biggest film ever.

All that's left is for Avatar top Camerons current top global grosser Titanic, and with Avatar having a gross of over $1.1 Billion and Titanic having a world gross of $1.8 Billion it only has a gap of $700 Million to make up before is outdoes Titanic, at this rate it will do it in a couple of weeks.

For home video enthusiasts today is a very sad day as Pioneer have announced they will stop making laserdisk players this month (June 2009).

Initially brought to market in 1978 under the name of DiscoVision the 12 inch disks were going to revolutionise home entertainment and bring that cinema quality high definition picture to the home.

Although the technology inside the huge players was far superior to that of it's magnetic tape (VHS and Beta) equivalents the lack of storage (60 minutes on each side) and high price stopped them from becoming a mainstream purchase.

American video enthusiasts took to the devices as did the Japanese, but Europe never really embraced the devices. VHS had a strong hold, and by the time people realised that their £15 film on the fragile tape was a bad idea and looked for alternatives the 5 inch DVD was hitting the market.

Here is a list of the top selling films on the Laserdisk format: -

  1. Terminator 2: Judgment Day
  2. The Lion King
  3. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
  4. True Lies

Despite it's hard life the format has laser 30 years and sold a quite respectable 360 million units. Disks didn't shift that many, Star Wars was one of the biggest sellers with 100,000 sold and The Lion King not far behind, although exact sales data is hard to find.
