News from around the web

The Star Wars Celebration Episode IX panel has just finished and after an entertaining 1 hour 20 minutes of director, producer and stars the title was shown during the first trailer as Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker.

The title brings up more questions, and maybe as widely reported its not the very end of the Skywalker saga, and just maybe we'll see that Luke character one last time.

The end of the trailer has a rather special surprise and brings the whole saga full circle, and ties all the trilogies together quite nicely.

The nods to the original trilogy are rather special in this trailer, thats what happens when you bring on a life long fan to write and direct.

Check out the trailer below, and a new poster is sure to follow, although it looks like the leak from last week may be the teaser poster.

We're all waiting for Star Wars Episode IX like its the end of the world and today marks a step closer as JJ Abrams the directer of said film Tweets that they have finished filming.

There is now 10 months to edit the film, add the special effects, do any reshoots and get the film ready for its December 20th release date.

In the mean time there is the movie poster to see, a title to announce and of course the trailer to finish and release which we should see during Star Wars Celebration in April.

In the mean tile check out the tweet below.

2018 was another year at the US box office where Disney dominated with their Marvel franchise and Pixar hit while there was a sprinkling of Dinosaurs and a Deadpool for good measure.

Black Panther

The top film in the US in 2018 was the critically acclaimed Black Panther which was released in February and grossed over $700 million during its box office run.

Avengers Infinity War

As if that wasn't enough Disney also took the second spot of 2018 with Avengers Infinity War which was released in April and took an amazing $678 million at the US box office.

Incredibles 2

And again as if that wasn't enough for Disney they also managed the third highest grossing movie of 2018 with their Pixar studio film Incredibles 2 which was released in June and grossed over $608 million.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

Universal took the 2018 number 4 slot in the US with Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and despite the fact that it took over $400 million in the US it was far from the 3 Disney hits above it.

Deadpool 2

Finally on the top five hits of 2018 in the US is the Fox property Deadpool 2 which took $324 million, interestingly Fox's movie devision is about to be acquired by Disney, and the film had a second dip of the box office over the holiday period.

Disney's Marvel domination is set to continue into 2019 with more high profile releases, and despite the lack of any Star Wars movies (another Disney property) on this list the anticipation for 2019's Episode IX is already growing.

Here is the top 10 film of 2018 at the US box office.

  1. Black Panther - $700 million
  2. Avengers: Infinity War - $678 million
  3. Incredibles 2 - $608 million
  4. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom - $416 million
  5. Deadpool 2 - $324 million
  6. The Grinch - $265 million
  7. Mission:Impossible Fallout - $220 million
  8. Ant-Man And The Wasp - $216 million
  9. Solo: A Star Wars Story - $213 million
  10. Venom - $212 million

Lucasfilms have today confirmed that The Force Awakens director JJ Abrams will take over writing and directing duties for Star Wars Episode IX.

The film is most likely then in safe hands after the fantastic job he did on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the film which got the franchise back on track.

The film is set for release December 20th 2019

When directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller departed the Solo: A Star Wars Story earlier this year it was a bit of a shock, now 'history' is repeating itself and today Lucasfilms have announced the departure of Colin Trevorrow from Episode IX.

See the official announcement on starwars.com.

The film is very much is pre-production so nothing has been filmed yet which, unlike the Han Solo movie

That movie got a big time Hollywood director in Ron Howard the come in and finish the film off, and reshoot much of the movie.

With that in mind who could come in to direct Episode IX?

How about Ron Howard? He's already in the fold, or even better Steven Spielberg, he's always said he'd like to do a Star Wars movie?

JJ Abrams must be in with a shot after the fantastic job on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, or how about Guillermo del Toro to bring a darker twist to what could be a darker movie, and talking of dark how about Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve.

Ridley Scott could do a good job and bring an interesting twist to the series and finally a man who has been in the Star Wars universe for many years, how about giving Lawrence Kasdan a shot?

I am sure it wont be long before we hear who will take the Episode IX directors chair, until then we can keep on guessing, but whoever it is they need to wrap up a 40 year long story, not an easy talk!
